"We had several problems with our fireplace. It had started not drawing well despite the chimney having been cleaned a year before.  A lot of fire smell was entering the entire house even with an apparently clean burning fire.  Also the back wall of the fire box had a number of cracked bricks and an earlier patching job done by a former owner was crumbling.  There was similar deterioration on the firebox floor.

Rich came on time for his estimate and immediately said the lower end of the flue might need to be recontoured because there was a flat spot that could cause the fire gasses to rebound downward.  He said the cracking in the back wall was probably due to moisture seeping down through an old chimney cap.  He told us at least some of the bad bricks should be replaced and any remaining cracks patched with the right kind of heat resistant cement.  He also recommended a new concrete chimney cap to keep moisture from penetrating into the porous chimney bricks.  He further suggested a vent to the outside at the back of the firebox to allow air to be drawn in to the base of the fire to assist in the drawing up of the gasses.

But we were all puzzled by why the fireplace was suddenly not working as well as it had over the years. Rich asked if there had been changes in the house, like new windows or vents.  Yes!  We had moved our furnace into the attic and changed the cold air return from near the floor to the hall ceiling.  Apparently that caused an air flow in front of the fireplace that picked up the fire smell and drew it into the furnace, which propelled it throughout the house.  Problem identified!  Rich thought the air vent would solve this.

Before Rich came to do the job, I tried the gas fire starter with no logs on the grate.  Surprise!  Flames rushed out of the cracks in the fireplace floor!  When Rich removed the brick around the line, he discovered a rotten pipe and no real connection between the gas line and the starter.  Another problem caused by the shoddy work done by (or for) the previous owner.

Long story short, Rich arrived for the job exactly on time and spent the whole day with a helper doing all the work he had recommended.  It was noisy and dusty, but he put a tarp covering the fire box and also placed tarps on the floor.  We added coverings for the furniture.  In the afternoon we asked him to replace some more bricks so there would be less visible patching.  He managed to do this and was done before we had guests in the early evening.  We have since tried the fireplace and it works fine!

We did have a little issue about the final bill, as the extent of his work had changed during the job and the effect was not clearly communicated.  We finally worked it out, but it pointed out to both of us the need to be clear about work changes.  We recommend Rich not only for his timeliness and good work, but his thorough diagnosis of, and solutions for, our fireplace problems.

"My 23 years old tile roof need to be replaced due to poor quality material used by previous local roofer. After search through 6 estimates, I pick Tony's bid because he listen to my concern and his prices seems fair. Normally roofing job starts in April or May, after the raining season, but our roof was leaking in several spots and Tony and Tino (the roofer) started the project in February. With the wettest raining season in recent memory in LA, it was a challenge to work on roof during the break between rain storms, but Tony and Tino's crew pull through the challenge. During the process, Tino also points out several issues with our chimney and he was able to do a thural repair and painting while he was up on the roof. As with any construction project, we encounter areas that need extra work and Tony was very easy to talk to and we were able to reach a reasonable price for the extra work. The only complaint I have about the whole project is that during the project, the crew allow the dirt got into my gutter and the cleaning process was not as thural as I'll like. Overall, I am very pleased with our roof project with OM Construction. Tony is very responsive during the process and address my concern very quickly. Tino's experience and attention to detail make me feel confident about the quality of our roof job."

"I have a lot of items that I store in the bathroom, and my bathroom that I had before the remodeling project had zero place for storing things, which meant that everything was either on the counter of the vanity or on the floor. It was a big cluttered mess. The bathroom I have now fixed all my storage issues: we put in new shelves and niches for all my cosmetics and shampoo bottles. And now I actually have space to move around! I have Tom and Lucas to thank for this. They did a great job not only with my master bathroom, but with the two others as well. I wanted a nice clean and white look with subway tiles. I know many people look down on subway tiles, so I was already expecting Tom and Lucas trying to talk me out of it. But they didn’t. They took my wishes to heart and executed them. Which was the case with all the decisions I made. If I was uncertain, they offered extremely helpful advice and suggestions, but they made sure that I was getting the bathroom that I wanted. I really enjoyed working with them and will hire them again if I can come up with another project for them to work on."

"There were 2 teams that came to the door, one for the deck and the other for the paver project, I explained the details and even showed them a somewhat blueprint of my dream deck and these guys were on point! ... The pavers were finished quick and my old deck was demolished, the wood was in pretty bad shape. The guys built it and refinished it with the waterproof stain I had chosen. I was amazed at their hard work. Maybe once or twice they ran late by coming in 15/20 min  late,  but they did a great job overall.
The pavers had a combo of cobble stone and river stone which led to the grassy area."

"I was very pleased with their work.  It went really well.  They laid out a good plan and they followed the plan.  They were on budget and if there were any changes, they let me know up ahead whenever there were things they discovered.  Since we didn't want to do over budget they gave me alternatives that I could choose from.  The company is well managed and they are truthful.  They were pretty much on time.  I actually still use them once in a while to have them come in and clear my trees.  There are a little on the high end but I think it is worth it.  I would rather pay a little bit more and have the good service.  What they gave me was a fair price.  Another thing that I really like about this company is that when I call them and the person that I wanted to talk to wasn’t there, they always get back to me within a day.  There are so many vendors that if we call, we never hear from them again or they never get back to us for two or three weeks but they are really prompt.  I'm very happy with this company.  If I have to have my trees done again that's who I would call."

"I have contacted Meir from t.n.l. construction and from the first meeting he show knowledge and professionalism.
Meir referred me to an architect and a structural engineer that t.n.l. works with I hired them and they also were very professional.
After the design was complete and we pull the permit i negotiated with t.n.l I got tow other quotes that not only were higher also the contractors did not show the professionalism that t.n.l showed.
We sign a contract and t.n.l started with the foundation than the rough and the final.
They ordered the long lead time items ahead of time in order not to delay the job.
Only in the last 2 weeks they demo the part that connect the addition with the existing house in order not to inconvenienced me.
The addition look beautiful and an integral part of the house.
T.N.L. were very professional and the kept the yard and the house clean.
All inspections passed the first time we call for."

"We took up our laminate floor after a water leak and discovered that our foundation cracks had worsened since we bought the house 2 years ago. One crack had widened and had filling washed out by water from the leak.

Armando came out and looked at the foundation. He told us we didn't have any major foundation issues, and just needed to have the cracks ground out and filled in with epoxy to fill and stabilize them. He also offered to clean up the foundation where we had just removed a fireplace -- there was rebar sticking up out of the foundation, some globs of mortar, small holes, and old floor tiles, all of which he offered to remove. HIs estimate was lower than we received from a larger company that didn't really want to do the job because it was relatively small. We call Armando back on a Monday to schedule the work, and he sent a 2-man crew over the next afternoon. They were a little late, but not enough to be a problem. The workers covered and moved furniture, did all the work, and moved the furniture back. They used a vacuum while grinding out the cracks, which didn't eliminate the concrete dust but did minimize it. Armando called after the crew left to make sure we were satisfied, which was a nice touch. We were very pleased with the entire process, start to finish, including the quality of the work.

FAQs for brick or stone tuck pointing projects in Big Bear City, CA

Masons charge between $70 and $110 per hour. A mason may have a minimum service fee ranging from $80 to $300. Most bricklayers offer free estimates and charge only if you proceed with the project. This clear pricing model assures that professionals inspect your property before beginning work and charge based on your project’s actual requirements.

A professional repointing lasts 20 to 30 years without maintenance and extends up to 50 years when maintained diligently. This process protects your brickwork using high-quality materials that ensure lasting performance and durability. Consistent upkeep preserves its strength and appearance, providing enduring protection and enhancing your home’s overall structural integrity for decades.

You know your house needs repointing when you notice clear signs such as cracked, flaking, or missing mortar and visible discoloration on the brick surfaces. Additional indicators include loose bricks, water damage, and gaps between the brick joints that compromise the overall integrity of the structure. Addressing these issues promptly protects your investment and sustains the durability and curb appeal of your home.

A house needs repointing to preserve both its structural integrity and visual appeal. Mortar acts as a vital bonding agent that holds the bricks securely together. When the mortar deteriorates, it exposes the structure to water infiltration and further decay, increasing the risk of costly repairs. Repointing stops decay and reinforces the exterior, ensuring long-term protection.
