Then when they started on the chimney they found they would need to remove some of the roof to access everything which would be some additional cost. While I was impressed at how quickly I received an estimate after calling, I found it very impersonal that they didn't call me back or touch base at all before putting together an estimate, as I wanted to ask a few specific questions that pertained to our project (for example, we have some rotted dormer shingles that I was curious if they would be able to replace as part of the project). The estimate that I received was very generic - a pre-printed sheet stating a list of materials and services that were included in the cost, and a dollar amount. The estimate was not itemized, or even separated into sub-categories of materials and labor. I don't know if they got on my roof to take any measurements (if they did, they never received explicit permission), or if they simply eyeballed it from the ground and took a guess.
We had a total of three estimates performed, and the price they quoted was very competitive with one of the others (the third was much higher). Ultimately though, I just didn't get the impression that my business was very important to them, and when stacked next to a competitor quoting a comparable dollar amount, they lost out this time to a company that I felt was excited and eager to work with me.
