"Jared did an amazing job on the railings by staining the wood and replacing the balusters. I was very indecisive about the color of the stain, I changed my mind in the middle of the project . Jared was very patient with me and accommodating. I would recommend Jared for any homeowner looking for a reliable, talented professional"

"We recently replaced the wood floors in our home and were looking to replace two existing staircase railings. We contacted several local contractors including Wood Stairs 4U. When Rod came to the house he was able to quickly understand what we wanted to do and made a few excellent recommendations based on the look of our house and our desire for a traditional look. Within a few days we had a competitive quote. I tend to do a fair amount of research about home projects and had several questions which Rod answered quickly and completely. When it was time to do the install, Rod told us it would take 4-5 days including applying a custom stain. He showed up on time and worked non-stop each of the days he was here. A few times, the shape of our staircase presented a challenge. In each case, Rod presented the options and made a recommendation. In the one case where I was not able to make a choice, he created a model using the old railings so that I could visualize the option. This took about an hour and Rod did it without any complaints. One of the reasons that we hired Rod was his ability to match the color of the new floor. We were not disappointed. The railings are beautiful and we are very happy. Would we recommend Rod? Absolutely! We have had several guests ask who we used for the railings. We did not hesitate to recommend Wood Stairs 4U."

"I closed on a house that had wall-to-wall carpet in most of the rooms a week before going on vacation. I contacted Five Star and Ricardo responded right away, we scheduled for him to come see the job that needed to be done (he was very punctual), and did the work while I was away and the house was still empty. I had 2 other estimates and his price was the most reasonable. Since the house was empty and some of the work had to be done at night there were some minor issues such as a few staples (literally about 5) that were not fully removed and a spot that was missed due to lack of adequate lighting. Ricardo showed up to take care of those issues himself. Ricardo was alway courteous and professional."

"Excellent work. They scraped and painted our front steps, basement steps and railings. They “thorosealed” all the ledges on our house and replaced the shingle on the garage door roof extension. Joe stained our two front doors and they look brand new. Everything was well done and looks great. They were punctual and very professional. We have used Joe’s company before and would definitely hire them again"

"We are completely delighted. Everything went perfectly. Danny, our sales representative, was great at explaining options, and was always available for questions. The expert installers, Andreas and Dmitri, were fun to work with, responsive to our requests, and even installed our new doorbell. I look forward to working with this excellent company again for new windows."

"We had an old home that had gotten too small for a growing family. We liked our neighborhood and wanted to remodel/add on. Matt (MTL Contracting) advised that it would be more cost efficient to replace the old house with a new modular home. He helped us from the beginning in planning out the home, letting us look at many Modular home plans from his supplier and from online sources that we found and letting us modify them to suit our needs. Matt delivered everything promised. We ended up with a very nice NEW house at far less cost than it would have been to move into a comparable one close to our neighborhood and without the headaches of updating old construction. At the outset, he said "I want to give you a TURNKEY house. Everything will be ready for you to move in" and that was what happened. Matt did a lot of the finishing work (front porch, garage, interiors etc..) himself in addition to subcontracting. We picked out hardwood flooring and he installed it, he installed the appliances we bought, tiled the bathrooms with our selection of tile etc.. In addition to building the house, he has stood by the construction and has made himself available when things needed attention (routine settling cracks, some siding that blew off in a windstorm etc.) We had a deck on the old house, and he managed to remove it during demolition and re-attach it to the new house. Later, we decided to remove the deck and put in a patio and MTL came in with a great price and put in a very nice Paver Patio. I would recommend MTL Contracting for your construction needs large and small. Great value and workmanship at competitive prices."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Branchville, NJ

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
