"I was impressed by the results that the team that build our new deck (John K., Teo, Fernando, and Lester) produced. They accurately followed the agreed upon design, adapting professionally as necessary to any surprises they encountered, ultimately designing and building a deck that exceeded my expectations. It's beautiful and sturdy - and construction itself took only 2 days, from start to finish! Our family and neighbors have already complimented it without solicitation, and I won't hesitate to recommend Fence & Deck Connection to my friends, neighborhood, and family as a result of the efforts of the team that I named here!"

"Construction has blatantly breached our contract. I shelled out a whopping $10,000 for what was supposed to be 20 simple outdoor steps, and instead, they?ve turned my hillside into a chaotic excavation site?a complete and utter disaster! After six long, wasted months and all that money there?s not a single thing to show for it except the extensive damage they?ve inflicted on my property. How could they let this happen? It?s infuriating and heartbreaking!"

"We hired KP Contracting for an elevated pergola and pavers in my grandfather?s backyard. Contract signed Jan 2025, downpayment paid Feb. Parts weren?t ordered until mid-March and arrived in May. They laid pavers but disappeared all June, ignoring calls and texts. Returned briefly in July but didn?t finish the floating deck. The backyard was left torn up with grass destroyed from storing inventory for weeks. They lacked skill to build the pergola properly, missed parts, and never inventoried materials. Wiring was poorly done with exposed wires needing multiple fixes. The motorized pergola remote was missing, then replaced with the wrong model and never calibrated. No progress updates or functional tests. Pavers loosened weeks after sealing. Supposed 3-week project dragged on 12+ weeks, still unfinished. Overpriced for subpar work. No apologies or compensation. Avoid KP Contracting. POC: Nestt and Phil."

"I am having a truly unpleasant experience with 7th State Builders. I paid 14,450.00$ deposit in good faith. They were contracted to rebuild my deck, place a roof structure and screen on the deck. I trusted that they would complete the work. Instead, they took my money and one year later had not even started on the project. Not only did they fail to perform the agreed-upon services for the deck, but I was forced to hire an attorney to try and recover my deposit. Which I haven?t yet (over one year). Thus, creating unnecessary expenses to an already frustrating situation. I would strongly advise against using this company. They are unprofessional, uncommunicative, unreliable and clearly not trustworthy. My experience currently has been a complete waste of time, money and emotional energy. Dr. CLARICE BROWN "

"Reliable Construction Inc. did an AMAZING job! I LOVE LOVE LOVE both my deck and fence!! First it was the installation of my fence around my pool, and my friends and family all commented on how beautiful it looked, and today was the completion of my deck that I can't wait to show off and enjoy for years to come! FAQs for deck or porch projects in Brandywine, MD

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
