Three-tab shingles feature a single-layer design requiring less raw material than the multi-dimensional construction of architectural products. Warning signals include curled or buckled shingles, bare spots where granules have disappeared, missing shingles, visible cracks, and granule accumulation in gutters. Inside your home, water stains on ceilings, light penetration through roof boards, or sagging sections indicate serious problems. While technically possible in some situations, installing new shingles over existing ones is not recommended by roofing professionals. This approach adds considerable weight to your roof structure, prevents proper inspection of the underlying deck, and may create moisture issues. Many building codes limit homes to a maximum of two roofing layers, requiring complete removal before new installation if that limit has been reached.
Your local climate significantly impacts both installation requirements and long-term performance. Performance-wise, three-tab shingles have lower wind resistance ratings compared to premium options, making them less suitable for hurricane-prone regions.
