"We hired Joel and his exceptional team to design the remodel of our kitchen and build our cabinets. They were very collaborative and patient with us as we continued to revise the plan until we found the design that worked best for us. We went from an enclosed 1990’s kitchen to an open concept with double islands. The cabinets well exceeded our expectations. They are stunning! Their attention to detail i in cabinet-making is first-class. The cabinet doors, drawer fronts and, trim are perfect. The custom-drawer inserts are spacious, clever and functioning. The whole team went above and beyond for us as we did our own contracting. They gave us lots of good advice and coaching along the way. We highly recommend them if you are looking for custom cabinets that are unique, functional and a work of arts"

"Just recently had a 48in x 48in egress window installed in our basement. The 2 gentlemen, Caleb & Graham were nothing short of awesome. I'm a retired carpenter and I can say their craftsmanship was second to none. Clean, precise. I was enjoying the perfect gape in our foundation and the framework even before they installed the window, because it was being done properly. Heck, even the hole they dug for the well was precise. Both Caleb & Graham were very friendly, communicative and courteous. Would use again and highly recommend."

"I researched basement waterproofing solutions and was considering doing it myself. Then I found Safe Basements and read the literature about their product/process. To me, it seemed better than other similar products. I was surprised that they cover my place -- 2 hours into Wisconsin, or 3 hours from Litchfield. Brad came out to inspect the problems in my basement -- horizontal cracking, bowing, and water intrusion. He was able to explain the causes of those problems as well as others that I hadn't noticed. We agreed to pay for anchors to stabilize one wall that was bowing, and install drain tile and a sump pump. I'll be honest, I didn't shop around. I have no idea what other companies are charging for the same services. I normally get 3 or 4 bids or other opinions. I felt comfortable with the amount of research that I'd done, the knowledge Brad seemed to have, and the information about the products that I decided to hire Safe Basements without talking to other companies. I don't regret that decision. The wall anchor/stabilization crew called me before leaving Litchfield. Their ETA was pretty close to the actual time of arrival. When they arrived, we discussed the work being done. They did the work. They cleaned up. They gave me information about the anchor system and what I needed to do to correct the bowing and cracks. Everything was done as expected. The drain tile/sump crew was stuck at a previous job. They called me the day before (Tuesday) my job was expected to start to let me know there would be a delay starting my job. He then called in the middle of the start day (Wednesday) to let me know, they wouldn't be to my house until the next day. I was expecting a call between 7 and 8 on Thursday to let me know they were leaving Litchfield. Instead, I got a call at about 7:15 to let me know they were 15 minutes from my house. When they arrived, we talked about the work to be done, they cocooned my stuff in plastic, and they went to work. I think they worked until about 7 that day. They returned on Friday at about 8:30, having stopped to dump my concrete and dirt and to pick up gravel and concrete. They worked until about 10:30pm on Friday. I appreciated that they finished on Friday even though it was later than I expected. They cleaned up everything thoroughly, and walked me through the details of the sump pump and battery backup systems. Even though they'd driven a long distance, worked two very long days, and it was very late Friday, I didn't feel they rushed through. The job was complete. I think they would have stayed later if I'd had anymore questions. Unfortunately, one of the workers left his very nice tape measure, and I have not been able to get it back to him."

"Overall, the project went very well, We are happy with the quality of the work and the result. The plans were creative, and we were happy with the design selections and guidance. There were a few unexpected changes to layout due to structural constraints, which resulted in a less efficient flow. The cost of change orders were not clearly explained prior to execution. The contractor was very hands on and at the job site extensively, and she was easy to get a hold of. The carpenter was not available to work on the project on Fridays, which did extend the project timeline. The contractor pointed out repairs/improvements that needed to be made to bring the home up to code. This added cost, but was necessary and appreciated."

"I bought two ProVia storm doors from Hoffman Weber, to be installed at a cost of just over $5000.00 for the pair. It’s an astronomical amount, but according to reviews, these were supposedly the best doors out there. I waited seven weeks for the doors to be delivered. My front door is acceptable as installed and works well, although the added “Art Glass” design looks pretty cheesy, as if I had added it to the pane of glass myself with a plastic paint pen, instead of having the decoration “professionally” applied. Hoffman Weber had no actual photos of the “art glass” decorations. I chose the design from line drawings only. On the other hand, the second door that I ordered is completely unacceptable, and I will be replacing it with a different door from a different company. The chief requirement for this door was that it be able to accommodate a pet door. I had lengthy discussions with the sales staff before agreeing to order the ProVia door, and I was assured that they could deliver what I needed. The first door delivered was a half-light door, although I was told that a custom ¾-light door would be sent with a pet door already installed. The door was sent back, seven weeks after it had been ordered. When Hoffman Weber contacted me with a new spec for reordering the door, I was told that ProVia could NOT provide what I asked for. At the time, I agreed to order a 3/4-light door without a pet door, and install an after market pet door myself. I waited another seven weeks for the replacement door to come in. However, when it arrived, it became apparent that this second door is completely unsuitable for installing a pet door. While it's called a 3/4 light door, it's actually more like a 7/8 light door, with the bottom panel being much too small to fit a pet door of any size. I asked before ordering this door what the dimensions of the bottom panel would be, stating that I’d need at least 16” of panel in which to put the pet door. I never received any response to my inquiry. The door was ordered in standard dimensions. It will not work for its intended purpose and will need to be replaced yet again. In addition, the window slide on the replacement door arrived broken, with a six inch strap of sharp, heavy metal protruding from the frame when the window was raised. After weeks of inquiries, ProVia eventually sent someone to fix the defect, but in the process of replacing the slide, made several cuts in the door frame. The door is back together and the window now slides up and down, but the structural integrity of the door has been compromised. The door also arrived with several nicks and scratches already present in the exterior paint, and with the wrong lock on the handleset. I communicated all this to my contact at Hoffman Weber, and have yet to have my concerns addressed. It has been nearly five months since I put in the original order, and I still do not have a back door that works for me. While I have paid off the balance of my contract, I am extremely unhappy with the service and the product that I have received."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Cambridge, MN

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
