"The work was good enough, and the report thorough, but -- For a small, 1600 sq-ft house, they did 7 mold samples, 3 tape lifts for pollen, one radon air test and a written report -- cost me $1600. A little homework after the fact made me realize it should've cost half that much. I was a newbie freaking out about mold and feel I was overcharged. Worse, they recco'd a remediation company that quoted me $30K to clean it all. Felt like they were tag teaming me. I found a green solution company that did it for 1/5th that much. Lesson is, do your homework before pulling the trigger."

"Top notch service from beginning to end. Penelope and the Boston Lead team provided what the local DPH personnel stated was, "the most complete lead abatement plan I have ever seen. I wish all reports were this nice." BLC was also instrumental in working through a crowded field of unprofessional and overpriced abatement contractors to find a qualified and affordable team to complete work. For those navigating the confusing and complicated world of lead abatement, I cannot recommend BLC enough. Efficient, affordable, and responsive from start to finish."

"My wife and I purchased the home on the basis that the home inspection seemingly had no red flags. I purposely waited to fill out this review so I could get to know my new home and truly confirm the home inspection results. Unfortunately for my family?s sake, the home inspector that came to our home was not as thorough as his 3 hour stay lead us to believe. Like any home, it had a few small simple items that needed to be addressed, which we took care of. However, one major item that should have been clearly evident to a professional was that the deck on the back of the home was improperly attached (verified by another inspection company and a separate contractor). The deck was lagged to the house on top of the siding and there was clearly no flashing installed as flashing would have been visible from the underside of the deck. This one oversight on the home inspection led me to find very extensive water damage on the rear of my home spanning the entire 35 feet of the deck. This required that the 35?x10? deck, which is 12? off the ground, needed to be removed from the home, all damaged material, including the entire rear wall under the deck, was removed and replaced and properly flashed. During this process I contacted Tiger, seeing as how on their website they clearly state that they ?care about our customers? and ?we stand behind our inspection? to see if they really would live up to these to statements. This phone call was not intended to ask for them to fix the problem, but simply for them to come out again to look and acknowledge the miss on their part and maybe at the least refund my inspection cost for not doing a thorough inspection which is what I paid them for. After speaking with a woman from the office on Sept 21, 2015 who agreed that it was terrible that the water damage was not found, she simply looked up my information and passed me off to the gentleman who initially completed the home inspection. He contacted me on Sept 23 2015, we spoke on the phone and after 11 minutes I was left with ?there is no need for me to come out and view it; it states right in our paper work that we don?t check flashing? and there was nothing for them to do. <br /> I purposely waited to write this review now having a clear mind seeing as how my house is finally weather tight and ready for winter. Looking back on the inspection day, one rather large flag I missed was that the inspector showed up without a ladder, how does one complete a truly in-depth inspection without one?  <br />"

"Let's go back to the puff back 5 years ago. I first met with a rep from Servpro. He arrived looking like he'd just come from a pub...stained shirt, 1/2 untucked, sweaty and overall unprofessional. Then I met with Steamatic whose rep looked like a neurosurgeon who had just come from surgery ~ sterile. The rep was courteous, professional, articulate, informative and compassionate to my home needs, scheduling, etc. No brainer, I chose Steamatic. When I told the Servpro rep that I had found alternate remediation providers, he was miffed, rude and offensive.  <br /> Steamatic were the first onsite and the last to leave (both disasters). For the puff-back, they referred me to all necessary contractors (engineers, etc.) to best handle my remediation and insurance claim. For the frozen pipe, their equipment was placed and maintained 24/7 (weekend stop-ins, etc.) for almost 3 weeks. They handled the commercial dry cleaner to come out and, if and when they could not be onsite, they contacted me to assure me that they would be out the next day but should I need anything I was assured they were available 24/7. <br /> What went wrong? I didn't take their advice to handle a private adjuster and a general contractor. The burst pipe remediation was a job that appeared to be manageable by me at the onset (I was home, and the water was shut off within hours of the pipe bursting). The insurance adjuster sent by my company was outsourced due to the horrific winter we had and lack of available adjusters. Said adjuster neglected to report that the hardwood floors on the lower level were also damaged (and the entire level floors would have to be refinished due to no break in the hardwood flooring). My plight to have a fair claim pay out was unending from then on. Steamatic were the professionals I sought for advice and they patiently and steadfastly helped me with each hurdle.  <br /> Steamatic was fairly priced and the company overall was professional, thorough, job work comprehensive and communications with me throughout each phase of the remediation exceptional. The price was on point to their quote and, in one stage of the work, they noted that we had both neglected to list an area on the original walk through. Steamatic did that work at no charge. Most notable was the company no-funny-business policy that I have come to value and respect. I suggested they include the private labor fees I paid out on their statement to the insurance company and we'd settle later. Their mission to provide honest, fair and actual rates was reflected in their firm denial of my request. Notable integrity and responsible corporate handling. The staff were qualified, trained, certified professionals who genuinely enjoy their work, their company and helping customers get their homes back to the condition it was in prior to the disaster.  <br /> It is no wonder that Steamatic is the contractor used by countless hospitals, academia, major corporations and government institutions spanning the state. As a former Fairfield County resident and longtime New Haven County resident, I endorse Steamatic as the ONLY remediation service contractor to consider. No holds barred. <br />"

"They came to my home at the time stated. I had supplied the materials and they did the physical work. The job was completed by the end of the day and they also bought the materials that I had overbought and that redused my final bill."

"Glenn Murdock, the owner, showed up promptly to examine my basement and prepare an estimate. He was very knowledgeable about the law and the health risks. The work took five days. His men showed up on time each day, put in a full eight hours, and were very responsive to any questions and concerns I had. Before starting, they had to build a containment chamber in my basement with negative air flow, so no asbestos fibers whooshed up into the main house or out the bulkhead door. After they finished, a technician from ChemScope in North Haven came to take air samples and confirm that we had no ambient asbestos fibers. The workers then took me on a walk-through, and I could see the pipes and cement floor were now immaculate. I thought I was done, but now the story gets interesting. A week later my husband and I demo'ed the wood paneling in the basement (to Dri-Lok the masonry) and found -- more asbestos! Within three days Glenn sent two of his men over to remove the additional fifteen feet or so of pipe wrap. Once again, great response and great result. Overall, the only negative about these folks is, they're pricey. My initial contract was for $4725, half to be paid after the containment chamber was built, the other half following the air samples and walk-through. It cost an additional $500 to remove the additional stuff we found because it wasn't covered in the initial contract. No one who does this work is cheap, however, and Murdock got great results. The work started and ended exactly on time, my second problem was resolved fast, and my basement is now clean, clean, clean. I'd hire them again, although I hope I don't have to."

FAQs for toxic lead testing projects in Canton, CT

If your home was built before 1978, there’s a strong chance it contains lead-based paint. Many pre-1980 houses also contain lead in their plumbing and decorative materials, so age alone is a significant red flag. Older homes near industrial areas face an even higher risk. Because you can’t confirm lead by sight, scheduling a test is the safest way to protect your family.

In older houses, lead can lurk in painted trim, window sashes, soil around the foundation, plumbing pipes, and even vintage hardware. The metal is toxic, and children and pregnant women are most at risk. Exposure can trigger developmental delays, learning problems, and organ damage. Because the EPA links even low levels to serious health effects, test every suspected surface and address any hazards right away.

A positive test means lead is present somewhere you can touch, breathe, or disturb. The next step is a full risk assessment to map exactly where the hazard lies and outline the safest fix: encapsulation, enclosure, or full removal. Repairs start at $1,000 but can exceed $10,000 for complete elimination, so act quickly and hire certified pros to keep your family safe.

EPA lead certification proves that inspectors, risk assessors, and abatement contractors follow federal safety rules under the Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Program. The credential costs an average of $300, and certified professionals can legally test, contain, or remove lead hazards. Hiring a certified pro protects you from fines and ensures the work meets strict health standards.

Lead-based paint looks no different from any other paint, so you can’t identify it by color or sheen. Even flawless walls may hide it. If paint starts chipping, flaking, or peeling, schedule a professional test right away. Only laboratory-grade testing confirms lead and guides the safest fix for your home.
