"Chance did a great job coming out looking at our basement and then knowing what our Radon readings were over a few months time recommended our system. He did a professional job on installation and it looks good. It matches our house so it doesn't stand out. Now our readings are below required normal and our basement smells great since the system pulls out excess moisture too. Chance is very professional. Great to work with. I would hire him again. I would recommend Chance for any of your Radon needs. "

"Absolutely first rate!!! Honest, candid, and supremely professional. Fantastic communications—both in the oral report and the incredibly detailed written report. Not simply pointing out issues but offering in depth recommendations for fixes. When Hugh said he’d inspect the new house we just bought as if it was for himself or his parents, it wasn’t just salesmanship “happy talk” or empty promises. The thoroughness of the inspection is eye popping! The entire process was painless, seamless, and smooth as silk. We’re very confident in the quality of the inspection and recommend Smoky Mountain Home Inspections wholeheartedly. One of the very best professionals we ever dealt with, in any area. If a ten star rating was an option, it would be fully deserved. Thank you! Dr Lani Kass"

"Paul Davis Restoration was recommended by our insurance company when we sustained damage to our porch from a fallen tree in March. The man who came out to inspect it assured us that the estimate would be uploaded to our insurance by that Wednesday. Wednesday came and went...no estimate. I called the Asheville office, where an employee told me that the report had to go through a "third party to be approved" before it could be submitted to State Farm. 'Mike' hadn't explained any of this to us. This woman assured me that it should be submitted no later than "next Wednesday." Yet another week passes...no estimate. I called the office again, where I was told that I needed to contact 'Mike' for any information. I did just that, and he claimed that he was not in the office, and that he would have to check on it when he got there. Another 24 hours passes without a phone call. When I called him again, he casually mentioned that this mysterious "third party" had sent his report back to him for a couple of corrections, and that it should uploaded to our insurance by (you guessed it) no later than that next Wednesday. ('Mike's customer service skills certainly left something to be desired.) Once more, nothing. The next time that I called, I asked to speak with someone in charge. I was given the name of the owner, 'Sharon.' The first couple of interactions with her were positive, and she seemed very helpful. Yet, once again, this "third party" was blamed for the significant delays in sending our estimate to State Farm. After a couple of communications back and forth, my husband and I were extremely frustrated by ANY lack of progress. I finally texted Sharon and asked her to send our estimate directly to us. She informed that 48 hours after the estimate was finalized, that they were 'allowed' to give it to us, and she would email it to me in the morning. Next day? Nothing. Once again, I had to text her and ask that it be sent to me. Sharon claimed that she thought she had sent it, but would send it again. And, since I'm writing this review, you can guess what happened...NOTHING. We NEVER received a copy of our estimate. I called State Farm, where one of the agents handling our claim said that they had finally received it, but that he doubted they would pay out the total amount for the work, because it looked as if the estimate given was excessive. Needless to say, it is over a MONTH later, we still have a severely damaged, unstable porch, and are looking for another contractor/restoration company. I have since heard from reliable sources that my husband and I are not the only ones who have had bad experiences with this particular office. Delay, excuses, confusion, and lack of meaningful customer service were the only things that we took away from our encounter with Paul Davis Restoration of Greater Asheville."

FAQs for radon gas testing projects in Cashiers, NC

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. The gas seeps through cracks in foundations and collects in basements and other low areas. Once you breathe it in, radioactive particles lodge in lung tissue and do long-term damage. Because you can’t see or smell radon, the EPA recommends testing your home every two years—and after major renovations—to keep your family safe.

Yes—every home should be tested. The EPA advises doing it at least every two years and any time you remodel, buy, or sell. On average, one in 15 houses nationwide sits above the recommended limit, and the only way to know where yours stands is a formal test. The equipment simply measures gas levels and won’t change your indoor environment, so the process is completely harmless.

Certified radon professionals—often home inspectors or dedicated radon mitigation contractors—handle testing. These radon testing professionals follow EPA protocols and use calibrated instruments to check levels throughout your house. Hiring a certified radon specialist means results you can trust for real estate deals, insurance requirements, and, most importantly, your family’s health.

Inspectors specialize in measuring radon gas levels, while licensed mitigation contractors design and install the systems that remove it. If your test comes back high, your inspector can point you to a qualified mitigation pro who will size and install the right fan, piping, or other equipment to bring levels down.

No—standard home air purifiers don’t touch radon. They’re built to trap dust and pollen, not radioactive gas. If testing shows high levels, you’ll need a dedicated mitigation system that vents the gas from beneath your home to the outdoors. Relying on a room purifier alone won’t keep your indoor air safe.

Opening a few windows in your home might dilute radon for a short time, but the gas seeps back in as soon as they’re closed. For a lasting fix, you’ll need a professional mitigation system—often a sub-slab depressurization fan—that pulls radon from beneath the foundation and safely vents it outside.
