"Fred was terrific! He was very professional, yet personable. I recently bought a house for my daughter and grandson to move into. We needed an outlet for a speed charger for an electric car and I didn't really know what was needed. He very patiently worked with me to understand what I needed and make sure we got the correct outlet and wiring installed. I was also concerned about security and Fred walked around the outside of the house with me to talk about selection of and installation of various types of security cameras and lights, showing a genuine concern for making sure I was comfortable with where and how everything should be placed to provide exactly what I was looking for. He showed up right on time on the scheduled day and did a wonderful job. Everything works perfectly. He will absolutely be the first person I call for any future projects."

"I was too worried, but my father-in-law & husband weren’t very happy about a hole at the top of our new electrical panel not being covered or filled in. I’m not worried because we plan to upgrade the kitchen & bathroom & figures it could be filled in after those 2 room were completed & all circuits were added instead of having to tear up the wall & costing money later just to add the circuits"

Small jobs welcome

"Excellent service. The AC folks were not ready for the Electrician, even though the Electrician showed up right on time. So Zar asked if I wanted them to wait or if they could come back after running off to do another job. I let them go and showed back up 2.5 hours later and did exactly what they needed to do. They were very quick with the installation and didn't disrupt any power to the rest of the house. Also their attention to detail and where to run the conduit was above any electrician I had ever hired."

"I called about 10:00 AM to ask if the work could be done before Christmas (it's Dec. 18), and by 12:30 Greg was pulling up at my house. The work was done beautifully in a couple of hours. Greg was a consummate professional, wore booties whenever he was in the house, and cleaned up after the work was done. I will definitely call Streamline next time I need electrical work done. They also do plumbing and HVAC, though I didn't use those services today."

"Couldn't have asked for better service. Issue ID'd and fixed in about 45 seconds flat. Load/line wired wrong. After fixing, secured GFCI and two affected outlets, and then gave a quick block of instruction on the issue. OUTSTANDING! Then, on top of that, I had used a coupon for 2 hours labor for $149.00 so they called the office and got that cut just about in half to what I figure was simply a service call fee. Advised on a washing machine wiring hookup as well which I was able to do myself cuz it was pretty cut and dry. Their knowledge of residential electric and residential CODE was just what we needed. HIGHLY recommend."

"I was pleased with the work done by Allred Electrical. The process of removing my old fuse box, installing a new panel, having the town inspector come out, and the electric company coming out to remove the old outside box took longer than expected. Allred was short handed because an employee was out due to illness but they have no control over the town inspector's nor Duke Energy's schedules. Even though the process from start to finish took a little longer than expected I was only without power for part of one day by they came back on a Sunday to check on something I thought was a problem. The only problems I can think of were the fact that I couldn't get a detailed invoice prior to the job of what was to be done with a cost break down and I'm waiting for them to come back to add outlets. So I will update this review once the full job is complete."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Chapel Hill, NC

While homeowners with substantial electrical knowledge might technically attempt a subpanel installation, most local building departments require permits and inspections for this type of work. Professional electricians understand local code requirements, can obtain necessary permits, and ensure the installation meets safety standards. Given the significant safety risks associated with incorrect electrical work, most homeowners benefit from hiring a licensed professional.

A standard subpanel installation takes an average of four to eight hours. This timeframe may extend if you're installing multiple subpanels or adding specialized circuits like those for spa equipment. Factors such as difficult access points, complex wiring paths, or permit processing times can also affect the overall project duration.

Adding a subpanel doesn't directly reduce electricity consumption or lower your utility bills. A subpanel simply redistributes power from your main panel to additional circuits. However, organizing your electrical system more efficiently may help prevent overloaded circuits and the associated problems. For actual cost savings, consider energy-efficient appliances and lighting instead.

The appropriate subpanel size depends on your specific electrical requirements. Consider the number and type of devices you'll be powering, potential future needs, and the capacity of your main electrical panel. An electrician can perform a load calculation to determine the most suitable amperage rating for your situation, ensuring you have adequate power without overpaying for unnecessary capacity.

A main electrical panel connects directly to your utility's power supply and contains your home's primary service disconnect. It distributes electricity throughout your entire house. A subpanel, by contrast, receives power from the main panel and redistributes it to a specific area of your home. Think of the main panel as the primary distribution point and the subpanel as a secondary branch that extends your electrical system's reach.

While electrical upgrades aren't as immediately visible as kitchen or bathroom renovations, they can contribute to your home's functionality and safety. Prospective buyers often appreciate updated electrical systems that can accommodate modern power demands. A properly installed subpanel that provides additional capacity for workshops, home offices, or future expansions could be an attractive feature for certain buyers, though the direct impact on home value varies by market.
