"This was our first big remodeling project and our expectations were quite high. However . . . Carpentry Plus far exceeded our expectations. They did a beautiful job and, it being our first remodel, were very helpful with suggestions on what was needed, from what items were needed, from cabinetry to backsplash to countertops to flooring. We'll be hiring them again for our next project."

"Quality of product installed and workmanship I am pleased with. However, post install is why I have deemed necessary to leave this review. The crew left food waste in our yard and gutters. Lawn was not adequately swept for nails and staples. Upon reinstalling my TV antenna, observed pieces of shingle, siding, aluminum flashing, nails and staples in one gutter. This prompted me to inspect all gutters, where I found more of the same. Had two exhaust vents installed for bathroom fans. The crew did not leave necessary couplers to connect provided duct to vents in attic. The project manager provided necessary couplings by personally delivering to my house which I am appreciative of. Discovered packaging material from shingles, along with shingle remnants in my attic. The sales presentation and documentation was why I chose Palmer Construction over lowest bidder, about $5000. The owner and sales person have yet to reply to my emails and/or phone messages. The project manager is the only staff who contacted me and followed up. Not how I would run my business or manage my staff. They also jeopardized an opportunity to earn an additional project. I got a new roof which hopefully will last until I move and they got my money."

"We are seniors who had foundation and floor support work done by AccuLevel. Soon after they got paid we started finding more & worse problems arising from their work than what we originally contacted them for. The floors they ?fixed? were not level and started heaving like a roller coaster, many of the doors do not open or close properly, our finished floors are squeaking & popping up all over and the foundation is shifting & leaking more that it originally did. Twice they sent out servicemen to fix the problems by making adjustments; that only made it worse. The last service man said that the problems were bigger than he could handle alone and would set up to have a crew come back in warm weather to make the needed repairs; that hasn?t happened yet. We found out that much of the work was done wrong and not done as per the plan and specifications or what our salesman told us would be done, the materials we were quoted, paid for and supposed to be used were substituted and never instal"

"Ray and his crew was wonderful! They did a great job on my house with the new windows, roof and siding/insulation. He threw in a few extras free of charge too...instead of the 1/2 inch insulation he upgraded and installed 3/4 inch under the siding free of charge. He's also installing my raingutter and exterior lights too free of charge. He is very competitive in his prices and extremely talented in this line of work. I recommend him to anyone who is looking to remodel. He redone my parents house after the 2008 hailstorm and did a wonderful job for them too. They were very pleased."

"Wow!!! Varies individuals write reviews when they’ve experienced horrible services or the service provider operated below the level of expectation. This is not the case with my review. Tanner Welsh was nothing but amazing. My desire was to change my stairs from carpet to hardwood. This job is not only and investment but if done incorrectly could be the worst nightmare ever. I saw warning pictures from other people who didn’t hire the correct company and I became very hesitant. I went to several home improvement sites and found Tanner’s company. I hired him for the job and currently I’m 100% satisfied. He was very professional. He completed the job in a timely manner. He’s trustworthy. I left him and his partner in my house without supervision for almost two weeks and no mishaps. Tanner if I could I would give you 10 stars. You’re compassionate about your work and it shows. You ensured the staining on the stairs was a perfect match to my Pre existing floor. You have an excellent brand. Keep up the excellent work."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Charlotte, MI

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
