"Cris was everything you could wish for in an electrician! He was very thorough and well-knowledged, punctual and informative! You can clearly tell that he has a passion for what he does. We hired Cris to replace our electrical panel because our previous one had became corroded after only having it for 6 years! The panel was giving us issues and we’ve hired several electricians to correct the problem which presented itself with flickering lights and electrical sockets losing power. Each time we received just temporary fixes with none of them ever pinpointing the source of the problem which eventually led to the panel having to be replaced. . However, Cris found the problem that was destroying our panel within minutes and it was on the outside of our house. A disconnected pipe about 20 feet up the side of our house was allowing water to get in! We were in good hands with Cris. He was very trustworthy he stood by his every word and walked us through everything he was doing before the process as well as showing us everything he did afterwards What a beautifully done job! Our system is now working just fine with no issues and looks as clean as a whistle! I will be hiring Cris for all of my electrical needs!"

"It went very well. Professional electricians. I have employed Blazer for several years for electrical work at my daughter's and at my home. My home (Chicago Bungalow) is about 100 years old, and they know how to navigate around old wiring and obstacles."

"Can't recommend these guys enough, they worked for 12 hours straight to replace my electrical panel and upgrade my service to 200 amps, they also replaced about 18 outlets in the house afterwards. They did a great job and I don't think anyone else could do that work faster or cheaper than they did. I had a lot of questions and they always took the time to explain everything to me. I plan on having some more electrical work done in the future and I plan on calling Lighthouse to do it."

"I needed to replace my fuse box with a circuit breaker panel. Allin was great at listening to me and addressing my concerns for the project. He also explained the process and offered me a few options. I appreciate he and his staff's hard work on replacing the panel - especially on a day when we had a heat wave. (We couldn't turn on the AC since the power had to be off while they worked on the panel.) I also appreciate that they cleaned up after they were done so there were no messes left behind."

"I'm glad we hired A and Z. Barry Goldstein gave us a call and come to our residence to look at the work needed. Barry is a great and sincere person and we enjoy the small talk but got to business. We were in need of GFCI electric switches in the kitchen, bathroom, and other areas. Plus, we need new electrical outlets in our closets in both bedrooms and have the pulley taken out, and ad a fixture on the outside of the closet. We also had a hazard with the powerline where the clamps that are attached to the outside wall of the house were hanging out. Plus the kitchen exhaust fan and the ceiling fan needed to be installed and they did. The crew explained what is expected in the process and the price. They placed it back to her tight in order for us to get COMED to fix the wiring. They came and fixed the job and did it cleanly and professionally. The crew was great to talk to and we felt they value customer service no matter what the job. We like their overall work and are responsive. I recommend A to Z for anyone looking for small to big jobs. Great job they did."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Chicago, IL

While homeowners with substantial electrical knowledge might technically attempt a subpanel installation, most local building departments require permits and inspections for this type of work. Professional electricians understand local code requirements, can obtain necessary permits, and ensure the installation meets safety standards. Given the significant safety risks associated with incorrect electrical work, most homeowners benefit from hiring a licensed professional.

A standard subpanel installation takes an average of four to eight hours. This timeframe may extend if you're installing multiple subpanels or adding specialized circuits like those for spa equipment. Factors such as difficult access points, complex wiring paths, or permit processing times can also affect the overall project duration.

Adding a subpanel doesn't directly reduce electricity consumption or lower your utility bills. A subpanel simply redistributes power from your main panel to additional circuits. However, organizing your electrical system more efficiently may help prevent overloaded circuits and the associated problems. For actual cost savings, consider energy-efficient appliances and lighting instead.

The appropriate subpanel size depends on your specific electrical requirements. Consider the number and type of devices you'll be powering, potential future needs, and the capacity of your main electrical panel. An electrician can perform a load calculation to determine the most suitable amperage rating for your situation, ensuring you have adequate power without overpaying for unnecessary capacity.

A main electrical panel connects directly to your utility's power supply and contains your home's primary service disconnect. It distributes electricity throughout your entire house. A subpanel, by contrast, receives power from the main panel and redistributes it to a specific area of your home. Think of the main panel as the primary distribution point and the subpanel as a secondary branch that extends your electrical system's reach.

While electrical upgrades aren't as immediately visible as kitchen or bathroom renovations, they can contribute to your home's functionality and safety. Prospective buyers often appreciate updated electrical systems that can accommodate modern power demands. A properly installed subpanel that provides additional capacity for workshops, home offices, or future expansions could be an attractive feature for certain buyers, though the direct impact on home value varies by market.
