"I had conducted both a short test (First Alert) and a 6 month long alpha track test (AccuStar) to determine the level of radon present in the finished below-grade room of my house.  Both test results showed that the radon level was elevated significantly above the EPA's maximum safe level of 4.0 pCi/L ( the short test indicated 8.2 and the long test was 7.1). <br /> Based on Angie's List reviews and the recommendation of a neighbor, Basement and Radon Solutions was selected to provide a quote for a mitigation system.  Following a visit to my home, Stanley provided several choices for the location of the system.  After discussing the pros and cons of each option with Stanley, a solution was chosen which provides effective mitigation and minimal visual impact. <br /> Stanley and his assistant, Roy, were very punctual and did a very professional and neat installation.  Stanley explained his work to me at every step of the way.   Stanley then set up his radon detector to determine the level of effectiveness of the system.   The reading taken after several days of testing was below 1 pCi/L, much lower than the EPA's danger point.   <strong>The system reduced my radon level to one eighth of the level that was present without the system.</strong> <br /> Several days later the electrician, Joe Holbert, completed the permanent wiring to the radon blower. <br /> I am totally satisfied, and now feel safe about using the below grade level of my home. <br />"

"I called Rick on a Friday and he was able to come out the next Monday. Rick spent 4 hours with me going over the historic home I had just purchased. Rick is a straight shooter. He tells it like it is. He is not a contractor, so he was not trying to sell me anything. We went into the basement, crawl spaces, outside, in the living area and in the attic. We went over all the systems. I learned a lot! I took pages of notes. The crawl space was a mess. There was a lot of trash and debris, torn and incomplete vapor barrier and the vents were not sealed. Animals (mice, insects, etc.) had left their droppings. It was gross! He showed that mold was not a problem. There were a few small spots, and told me how to treat them. I asked a lot of questions. He told me what I would need to take care of this space. I ended up hiring the contractor he recommended (after checking him out on Angie's list first). He was the best of the lot. <br /> Rick showed me how to seal the HVAC in the basement (which I did myself). He gave the name of a company to service my unit (which I used). He showed me how to seal off the floor registers inside the house (which I did myself). He showed me what needed to be done in the attic. There was a leak in the roof which he found. I hired someone to come fix it. He showed me what needed to be done to air seal the attic. The insulation was adequate. I have hired a contractor (checked out on Angie's List) to come and take care of the attic. <br /> Rick said to call him anytime. A month after his visit, I called him yesterday. The one outstanding issue I have with the house is some odors. I told him the steps I had taken and he gave me some suggestions on further things to try and people to contact. I plan on following up with that.  <br /> <br />"

"We had a house under contract and called Knight to do an inspection and radon testing. Eric from Knight was easy to get in touch with and answered all of my questions on the phone before we scheduled an inspection. He never sounded rushed and took the time to explain what they would look for in an inspection. Since our house was FSBO we did not have a lot of information about the age of the roof or HVAC. <br /> The inspection was seemless. My husband followed Eric around during the inspection asking questions, which he answered thoroughly. The inspection report came in a day and a half later and was thorough. They had checked every single thing we could possibly think to ask about, and then some. There were color pictures and suggestions for repairs. We called Eric and spent 30 minutes on the phone while he walked through every detail. He even gave us an idea on the pricing on some of the items that needed to be repaired. <br /> We really enjoyed working with Eric and would recommend him and Knight Property Services to anyone! Great, thorough inspection with tons of details and the staff took the time to answer all of our questions. <br />"

FAQs for radon gas abatement projects in Clemson, SC

The only way to know whether your home or water supply contains radon is to schedule a professional test. A qualified radon inspector will collect samples, deliver lab-verified results, and explain the findings for $150 to $800. Once you know your exact levels, you and your radon mitigation pro can choose the right system and tackle the problem before it affects your family’s health.

Both roles tackle radon, but they focus on different steps. Inspectors test your home, interpret the results, and determine whether levels exceed EPA guidelines. Mitigation pros design and install the system that lowers those levels. Some companies do both, but the skills and equipment differ, so always verify that the person you hire is properly certified for the specific service you need.

Installing a mitigation unit fixes radon problems by reducing indoor gas levels to established safe standards. A system designed and installed by a mitigation expert, tailored to your home's specific layout and foundation, guarantees effective radon reduction. This expert installation ensures consistent performance over time while safeguarding your indoor air quality.

Open windows and doors do not reduce radon levels because they trigger a pressure imbalance that draws radon-laden air into your home. This practice fails to control radon concentration and can even worsen the issue. An active suction mitigation system provides a proven, safe, and effective solution to reliably reduce radon levels.

Radon mitigation systems generally last between 10 and 30 years, depending on system type and maintenance. Passive systems endure the longest because they have no moving parts, whereas active systems, which use a fan, require fan replacement every 5 to 10 years. System components, such as PVC pipes, seals, and fittings, can remain effective for decades when paired with periodic inspections and proper maintenance.

Radon mitigation systems consume between 300 and 3,000 kWh of electricity per year, depending on fan size and system design. On average, an active radon fan draws 100 to 300 watts continuously, which translates to roughly 876 kWh annually, and adds $30 to $300 to your energy bill each year. Choosing a high-efficiency fan and ensuring tight sealing around pipes helps minimize these ongoing costs.
