"These are honest guys who do a decent job. They came out originally on a late night when sewage backed up through the house drains. When it turned out to be a recurring problem, they didn't charge me for the second visit to unclog the same spot through the cleanout. I scheduled a final visit to dig up and send a snake with camera down the pipe to check for problems. Once they dug up the dirt around the pipe, it was quickly discovered that a backflow preventer valve was constantly clogging. They removed the valve from the sewer line, replaced it with straight pipe, and didn't waste any time with the snake. They could have tried to charge me for using the snake, anyway, but they didn't and saved me money in the process. <br /> I'd definitely recommend them for anyone in the area. <br />"

"Due to replacement of a hot water heater and basement remodeling, three gas regulators had to be relocated and repiped to comply with the gas piping building code. The original contractor for the hybrid hot water heater misrepresented his competence and his certification. We wanted a gas contractor who had the proper certification and license and all of whose technicians were trained and had their own certification. The work was done in two phases; the first phase was repiping the incorrect gas installation of the gas water heater which cost approximately $1,100. The second phase, costing $2,700, was relocating the regulators for the existing furnace and fireplace insert. Strict code compliance requires that all gas fittings are accessible, so new gas piping was run from the meter to an accessible manifold. The quality of the work is very high and is essentially commercial/industrial grade. The issue here is two-fold: to get a licensed and certified gas fitter to perform this work is inherently costly; but, in addition, Tim Pike contracts his work by the hour, so you never really know how much a job is going to cost beforehand. The first phase took his technicians 14 man hours; the second phase took them 22 man hours. In both cases our perception is that it should have taken far less time to do these relatively simply piping jobs. We went with him because of his complete description of the work to be done, his obvious competence, and that he was very pleasant to work with. He took time to completely describe the approach, issues that might be encountered, and how to solve any anticipated problems. What he didn't give us was an idea of how long things would take, and even a remote idea of the cost. <br /> We had two competing quotes which were good faith estimates from certified and licensed gas fitters. One was for $850 which we completely discounted and did not consider because it was too low; the other was for $2,900 which we thought was too high because the impression we got from the contractor was that the job was too small and he really wasn't interested. We went with Pike because of the above reasons and also because we incorrectly assumed that his price would be about the same as the second bid of 2900. We were wrong by $700. I'm not sure if we would have not chosen Pike had we known the final cost; it's just that we assumed that he'd be in the same range. Our bad. Based on that, and that's the only reason, we wouldn't hire him again because we just can't take the chance of the cost being prohibitive. Otherwise, he's excellent in what he does."
