"George and his entire company were amazing! George sat down with us and explained every detail of the work, and left us with material that gave us an education on Radon itself. This was very helpful for many reasons.. The work itself was conducted in an effective, clean, respectful and thoughtful way by his crew., and he came by to ensure completion and satisfaction. The crew even helped us with something adjacent to their job for no extra charge. I cannot recommend this company enough!"

"My tenant contacted me with concerns about mold on the ceiling and windows of their bathroom. This stemmed from a leak in the roof a few months earlier. I contacted Mike and he scheduled to take a look within that same week. He examined the bathroom, the other rooms in the house and the attic. He said that his product would eliminate the mold without having to rip up all the sheet rock, etc. We scheduled a time for him to come back to spray the product and he arrived as promised. It only took him a short time to spray the house and I was surprised how much the mold disappeared that same day. We scheduled a second visit just to make sure the product hit all the mold spores and it seemed to kill all the mold without having to replace the ceilings and walls. Also, he has a guarantee that if I see mold re-surfaced at all they will come and re-mediate. Overall I think this was a good, cost effective way to eliminate the problem and the tenants have not had any issues since.  <br />"

"I received my radon results in a timely manner. I did not hire them specifically, (so, I cannot say I would hire them again) the local company contracted them for this service. The home inspector I hired, handled this service for me and included the results in his report."

"The inspection went very well. The inspector Tim McGovern showed up on early, and was waiting for us. Tim started the inspection placing Radon collectors around the house. Then we began the house inspection. Tim walked us around the exterior of the house, he took the time to explain all of his findings to us. He answered every question we asked with clear concise answers. Tim walked us through the interior of the house. Tim checked all appliances, performed a through septic check, checked the grounding on every electrical outlet, checked insulation, examined the furnace, checked the CO2 level of the furnace, checked the water heater, checked the basement condition, and much more. <br /> The total inspection lasted approximately 5 hours. When the inspection was complete we had all of our question answered, and we learned that we needed an electrician and a chimney specialist to review some findings. Tim provided us a report though e-mail 3 days after the inspection and a written report 5 days after the inspection. Overall my wife and I are very pleased, Tim gave us an excellent home inspection and made buying our new home a safer investment."

"Steve with Basements and Above Home Inspections was great. He took his time thoroughly inspecting our potential new home and at the end reviewed his findings and even showed the ones that were accessible to us and explained the issue and possible solutions. He even took the time to answer all of our questions and not once did we ever feel rushed or like we were a nuisance. As first time homebuyers we had a lot of questions, we are glad that we did our own research when deciding which home inspector to hire and would highly recommend to anyone needing inspection or testing services."

Please consider me for your home inspection needs. I serve Onondaga, Cayuga, Oswego, Cortland, Madison, and Saratoga counties. Many have found comfort in knowing that their home is being inspected by a mechanical engineer with a dozen years of engineering experience. Others have found comfort in knowing that I have several investment properties in the area and that I do all my own work. I use a continuous radon monitor so I can have lab-analyzed radon results to you in 2 days, as opposed to 7-14 days with charcoal filters. I have eKey access so I don’t need a realtor to let me in/out of the home. I do home inspections, radon inspections, well flow testing, septic dye testing, and water quality testing. My goal is to point out all safety issues and to find costly defects that you can use as leverage to lower the price of your purchase.

FAQs for radon gas abatement projects in Cortland, NY

The only way to know whether your home or water supply contains radon is to schedule a professional test. A qualified radon inspector will collect samples, deliver lab-verified results, and explain the findings for $150 to $800. Once you know your exact levels, you and your radon mitigation pro can choose the right system and tackle the problem before it affects your family’s health.

Both roles tackle radon, but they focus on different steps. Inspectors test your home, interpret the results, and determine whether levels exceed EPA guidelines. Mitigation pros design and install the system that lowers those levels. Some companies do both, but the skills and equipment differ, so always verify that the person you hire is properly certified for the specific service you need.

Installing a mitigation unit fixes radon problems by reducing indoor gas levels to established safe standards. A system designed and installed by a mitigation expert, tailored to your home's specific layout and foundation, guarantees effective radon reduction. This expert installation ensures consistent performance over time while safeguarding your indoor air quality.

Open windows and doors do not reduce radon levels because they trigger a pressure imbalance that draws radon-laden air into your home. This practice fails to control radon concentration and can even worsen the issue. An active suction mitigation system provides a proven, safe, and effective solution to reliably reduce radon levels.

Radon mitigation systems generally last between 10 and 30 years, depending on system type and maintenance. Passive systems endure the longest because they have no moving parts, whereas active systems, which use a fan, require fan replacement every 5 to 10 years. System components, such as PVC pipes, seals, and fittings, can remain effective for decades when paired with periodic inspections and proper maintenance.

Radon mitigation systems consume between 300 and 3,000 kWh of electricity per year, depending on fan size and system design. On average, an active radon fan draws 100 to 300 watts continuously, which translates to roughly 876 kWh annually, and adds $30 to $300 to your energy bill each year. Choosing a high-efficiency fan and ensuring tight sealing around pipes helps minimize these ongoing costs.
