"Our daughter's oven quit working - it failed to light. I looked at it and heard a noise and the igniter did not spark, so I assumed the igniter was bad. I removed it and went to the local appliance parts store (in Rockford, IL). At the counter the store employee was looking up the part and cost when the gentleman next to me (another customer) began to ask me what the stove was doing and the type of noise it as making. I responded as best I could and he then told me that in his many years of repairing stoves the problem was never the igniter that I was trying to purchase. After discussing the problem with him, I did not purchase the part as it was electronic, not returnable and over $40. The customer at the counter talking to me was Fred of Fred's Appliance Repair. We spoke further and I thanked him for his advice. <br /> My daughter called Fred's and set up an appointment. After Fred arrived, he did the needed diagnostics and determined that the problem was in fact not the igniter, it was a gas valve. He obtained the part, replaced it and the oven is lighting and working fine. <br /> There are several great points to this story and review. First, Fred did not have to say a word to me at the parts store. He could have ignored me, gone about his business and left it at that. Instead, he chose to intercede, provide some information and very good advice. Secondly, he was totally accurate in his assessment of what the problem was not - and saved us the money and subsequent <br /> frustration. Third - he was professional. From the manner in which he approached me in the appliance store, to his arrival, his demeanor, his care in working in the kitchen, his "kid-friendly" style (working around some small children), his diagnostics and the overall repair and price. And, I should add that Fred was not shilling for his business when he spoke to me. When asked about costs he explained the trip charge to me and added that "we're all about the same" - referring to other repair services. Also, he did not offer a business card until I asked for one. <br /> Fred is service oriented, a professional and a gentleman. I highly recommend him as I hope the above narrative reflects on the type of person he is and the type of service he provides. I am not surprised by his excellent rating on Angie's List - he runs a quality business and knows what he is doing. <br /> <br /> <br />"
