"Isaiah is a great professional. We built a new construction detached garage and renovated a 120 year old home. Isaiah upgraded one main circuit panel with and installed two new supplemental electrical panels. He ran 240V/60 Amp underground from the homes main panel to the new garage. He completely wired the garage with multiple lights, receptacles, security and Level II electrical vehical charger. In the main home, he upgraded the main service panel, added a sub-panel, rewired about 65% of the house to include new receptacles, lighting and appliance boxes. The quality of his work can be summed up by the Franklin County Inspectors comment when he said, "Who is your electrician? I've been inspecting new construction, rennovation and repair for nearly 30 years, and this is the best electrician work I've ever seen." In summary, you will get a professional job at a reasonable price from Isaiah. We are fortunate to have this professional living and working in our community."

"Rob Hunt is the complete professional... we were actually sorry to see him go! He was here for our annual electrical review and possible upgrade; but largely because we have been with Blanton's for several years, we were already good to go. Rob took as much time as we needed to answer questions and explain his recommendations for the future, to include projected costs. His inspection was thorough, and he explained everything he was doing and why. We could not have been happier with the service he rendered us... we should all do our jobs as well as Rob Hunt does his!"

"Couldn't have asked for better service. Issue ID'd and fixed in about 45 seconds flat. Load/line wired wrong. After fixing, secured GFCI and two affected outlets, and then gave a quick block of instruction on the issue. OUTSTANDING! Then, on top of that, I had used a coupon for 2 hours labor for $149.00 so they called the office and got that cut just about in half to what I figure was simply a service call fee. Advised on a washing machine wiring hookup as well which I was able to do myself cuz it was pretty cut and dry. Their knowledge of residential electric and residential CODE was just what we needed. HIGHLY recommend."

"SAOU was the best! The job kind of got tremendously involved and he pulled through and did such a wonderful job. The wiring in my home had not been touched since it was built in 1977! He knew exactly what to do! Very, very personable and very knowledgeable extremely intelligent I would recommend him for all of my electrical needs and will be referring him to all of my friends. Bottom line is he really does want you to be safe and have everything up to code and Did amazing!! He doesn’t try to make you spend any extra, very cost-conscious! The job ended up being very intricate, but he made it seem like it wasn’t that big of a deal, but it really was. I can’t believe I found him, he is a keeper for sure! "

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Durham, NC

While homeowners with substantial electrical knowledge might technically attempt a subpanel installation, most local building departments require permits and inspections for this type of work. Professional electricians understand local code requirements, can obtain necessary permits, and ensure the installation meets safety standards. Given the significant safety risks associated with incorrect electrical work, most homeowners benefit from hiring a licensed professional.

A standard subpanel installation takes an average of four to eight hours. This timeframe may extend if you're installing multiple subpanels or adding specialized circuits like those for spa equipment. Factors such as difficult access points, complex wiring paths, or permit processing times can also affect the overall project duration.

Adding a subpanel doesn't directly reduce electricity consumption or lower your utility bills. A subpanel simply redistributes power from your main panel to additional circuits. However, organizing your electrical system more efficiently may help prevent overloaded circuits and the associated problems. For actual cost savings, consider energy-efficient appliances and lighting instead.

The appropriate subpanel size depends on your specific electrical requirements. Consider the number and type of devices you'll be powering, potential future needs, and the capacity of your main electrical panel. An electrician can perform a load calculation to determine the most suitable amperage rating for your situation, ensuring you have adequate power without overpaying for unnecessary capacity.

A main electrical panel connects directly to your utility's power supply and contains your home's primary service disconnect. It distributes electricity throughout your entire house. A subpanel, by contrast, receives power from the main panel and redistributes it to a specific area of your home. Think of the main panel as the primary distribution point and the subpanel as a secondary branch that extends your electrical system's reach.

While electrical upgrades aren't as immediately visible as kitchen or bathroom renovations, they can contribute to your home's functionality and safety. Prospective buyers often appreciate updated electrical systems that can accommodate modern power demands. A properly installed subpanel that provides additional capacity for workshops, home offices, or future expansions could be an attractive feature for certain buyers, though the direct impact on home value varies by market.
