"Received an estimate and work was done satisfactory.. Roof repairs can be tricky but so far no leaks but it has been very dry for weeks. Need more rain to check the area to declare success."

"We had NorthCreek Construction out for a basement remodel and we're very please. Kirk, the owner was an overall good dude and made sure his crew was punctual and tidy. The basement turned out beautiful!"

"Living in Cheboygan, Michigan, it can be hard to find a trustworthy contractor. We are so glad we found Community Construction through their website, CommConstruct.com. We ended up hiring them to completely remodel one of our bathrooms. We wanted to change from a standard bathroom with a tub and shower to a beautiful tiled walk-in shower, along with a new tiled floor and new vanity. My wife and I are extremely happy with the results and highly recommend them."

"Rick and his crew are awesome! They worked with us to remodel a bathroom for our elderly Grandfather. Not only was Rick friendly, knowledgeable and professional, he was also very sensitive to our situation and was able to accommodate our schedule. We were so impressed with Rick and his crew that we asked them to take on several other projects in the home. I would recommend Bay Ridge to anyone looking for a true professional that not only produces beautiful end results (our bathroom is amazing) but who also listens to your needs and help you get there on time and on budget! We will continue to use Bay Ridge for all of our needs -5 stars !!"

"We thought we needed foundation work. They not only told us that was incorrect. They directed us to a structural engineer who would be able to help us. No charge. Most appreciated."

"I would (and will) hire Rick again to work on our home improvement needs. Rick handled everything with knowledge, good workmanship, professionalism, caring, etc. He was always on time, always up front about things and very easy to talk to. This was our first venture into a major home improvement, and we had a lot of questions. Rick was always both willing and able to answer our questions. I was due to have our second baby at the beginning of September and Rick knew I wanted this project completed before then - if at all possible. Everything that depended on Rick, was completed. (Things dependent on my husband and I making up our minds - not so much - hence the November completion date.) <br /> We're very happy with our finished basement, with the quality, the aesthetics, etc. For me, when I read these reviews, it always speaks volumes if the homeowner is willing to rehire. As I mentioned above, I would definitely rehire Rick. As I was typing this review, my husband asked what I was doing. I told him I was finally finishing the review for Bay Ridge Development on Angie's List. He was happy I was finally doing this review (yes, I know it's over a year old), but more importantly, he instantly stated that we need to call Rick to start working on....and began listing multiple projects. I think that says it all. <br />"

"Only issue I had was the dirt.  It was hard for them to get the dirt out of the basement, along with the broken up cement.  My entrance to the basement is in the middle of my house.  They laid down runners and put up plastic.  Cleanup was difficult too.  That's the only part of this whole process that was a little difficult.  I'm still cleaning dust out of the basement!  Other than that the owner was very interested in making this a success.  He is very professional and really knows his work.  I have had no water in my basement.   I would use him again!"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Empire, MI

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
