"I received 3-5 quotes (and a half-quotes) and schedules from various asphalt pavement installers - Hardrock was the highest quote offered but only by $1000 or so including the special sealing option which no one else offered. You really need to have pavement done right the first time, otherwise the 'rip-up' to fix it later on alone will cost just as much as the original job. My $12k driveway job was for ~150' single lane and a big driveway pad off the house, included 4"-6" of compacted QB gravel base then 3"-4" of I5 asphalt, then included the $2000 special chemical seal coating treatment that can only be done right after laying hot asphalt and avoids the need for bi-yearly sealing for the first 7-10 years. From my research, this design and plan exceeded what most people do for a residential driveway. The 'actual' laying of foundation materials and the pavement from what I witnessed appeared more than what was contracted, and has held up perfectly for the first year so far. No sinking or cracking - there are only a few rock-pebble pops over the entire driveway. Ideally, if you can avoid using the driveway for a full month after install - that will reduce scuffs from deliveries and visitors as the pavement needs about a month or more (actually months through the hot summer) to fully set-in and cure. The owner was present and working the job for about 2/3 of the day, and overall the team of 8-10 guys did a great job. Pavement was laid while it was sunny. I can recommend Hardrock for those who want a strong driveway done right"

"WARNING: DO NOT HIRE THESE PEOPLE! To start, we got a free quote on May 4th for a concrete patio. They seemed to know what they were doing and gave us the best price, so we went with it. We should have known cheaper never means better. We gave them a deposit and they told us that the remainder would be due at completion, however, each time they were here, they asked for more money to be given. From the start communication and scheduling was very difficult. It took us awhile to get in touch with Vinnie and to get them to come out to do the work. They would say they would come on X day, then they wouldn't show until a few days later, however, we continued to give them the benefit of the doubt and were beyond patient with them from start to finish. Come pour day, which wasn’t until the end of May, they hired only 2 workers, which we later found out, were not “real masons” They poured the cement and only finished half of it. They left that day with a whole cement slab in our backyard with only half of it “finished” They said they would come back the next day to complete it. Cement patios are supposed to be done in one shot- monolithically, or they will crack. They didn’t show the next day to finish. Days go by and still they did not come back to finish it. So now we have a dried cement unfinished slab in our backyard. We then realized that they poured it against the foundation of our house with no expansion joints, which is not up to code. The few days that passed, it rained a lot and we had huge puddles on the patio- even on the “finished” side- just shows you that they did not know what they were doing and it was completely uneven. Truly unhappy with how things were going, we requested them take out the cement slab, clean the cement that was all over our siding, plant new grass where they killed our grass, and most importantly, refund us our money. At the time, they agreed, but it took FOREVER to get any work or money back. Come June 8th, they finally came back to take out the patio, they took out half of it and refunded half of our money. They also never showed to clean our house and replant grass seed like they promised, but at this point, we just wanted our money back. It is now July 18th and after being ignored by Vinnie for weeks and weeks, we had to threaten them with a lawyer, and complaint to BBB and Federal Trade- and it wasn’t until we did that, that they finally sent us the reminder of our money back. I would also like to add that Eric, the “salesperson” as he called himself was nice to us, but VERY rude to his workers that they hired to do work. He would yell at them and we overhead many racial comments he would say to them and it made us feel super uncomfortable. Again, save yourself and do not hire these frauds."

"I used this company for a number of years and the overall service is no longer the same. I had them over to clean my gutters and I witnessed ladders slamming against the side of my house and they tore one of the edges from the corner of my roof with their step ladder. I will not use them going forward."

"Joe is responsive, explains everything he is going to do, and does an outstanding job. Seriously, the quality of his work is fantastic. I cannot recommend him enough. I stress to you, the level of quality and honesty is unmatched. He has now done work for me twice. Once on stair repair, which was fantastic. Second time, are the pictures below. The stairs finally needed full replacement, and boy were they. Look at the quality of work below. I assure you that is not how good those stairs originally looked. If you need any kind of work done to your stairs, Joe is the guy you gotta call. Highly, highly recommend!"

"This is follow up to my previous post that I wish I could remove. I wish I could post my pictures here. He was hired to do my driveway with an apron and level my property to avoid water build up. I contacted him 10 months after the job was completed to let him know that all the pavers in my apron were coming up and weeds were coming through. He never called back, I sent him an email and he also never got back to me. I had to contact another contracter only to tell me that the job was not done properly. In addition, my property is still like a little lake. After more than thousands+ dollars, I would use someone else. He is not responsible. DO NOT USE"

"I originally gave this company a D because I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, which you can see by my the first half of my review, but that has since changed at the end of this review. part 1..... .I am a little conflicted on how to write this review and hope I can edit it if David ever resurfaces. David was great and patient the entire way through the process. Answered all my questions, concerns, worked around other projects, etc. i never had a reason to think he isn’t the right guy for the job, heck, he may still be if I ever learn the backstory. The issue is, I cant get in touch with him now that I am having a slight issue with the driveway. One, that will only get worst if not fixed, I have called numerous times and sent at least 5 messages via Angie's List since roughly July 3rd. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt (sick, out of the country, on vacation, busy season, etc). However, it is almost going on a month and I’m stuck wondering how to proceed as he hasn’t responded. Even other contractors dont have anything bad to say about him, but do suggest the driveway wasn’t compacted with a “heavy enough” roller. Thus, the cause of the slight indentations in the driveway (have gotten worst since originally typing this). The entire point of paving my driveway was to get rid of those and much, much worst damage that the driveway had. Everything else is great - pitches good, survived the scaring, no damage to my new fence or patio pavers, WAS (before he got all my money) a great communicator, started/finished on time. I am hoping you see this review and resolve the issue so I can leave the review I was going to originally leave (all great comments). Anyone else reading this, take it for what it is...maybe something else is going on that is more important than work right now..who knows.. I just hope the one year warranty is honored. part 2) I changed my review to F because I have been waiting for over a month and I now know the company is active and still around. I have simply been ignored and what appears to be ripped off. All of American Paving Company jobs come with a warranty and mine is not being honored. I expected better from a company that has been around for 60 years and initially seemed very legitimate. thanks for ripping me off and not honoring your work. very unprofessional and I will be reporting this issue to the state and town. This is why I suggest people don't pay contractors with a check, which is unfortunately only what this company takes. I felt comfortable enoaugh paying via this way because of his previous great reviews. Now, the only recourse is small claims court and the attorney generals office. all emails, phone calls and fax messages ignored since July 3rd. It is now August 25th, 2019. To make matters worst you redid a driveway 8 houses down from me and still didn't stop by or leave a note. You probably got the business from the sign you left at our house. I hope you sleep well at night knowing you screwed me and my family out of $3500.. .so much for my 7 year old having a smooth driveway to play basketball on, which is half of the reason I fixed the driveway. You should be ashamed."

FAQs for asphalt paving installation projects in Essex Fells, NJ

Most driveways wrap up in roughly a week. Allow two to three days for installation, followed by an additional two to three days for the surface to cure. Concrete and asphalt follow this timeline, whereas a gravel job often finishes more quickly. Laying out the schedule upfront makes it easier to plan your week and your budget.

Sealer prevents water, salt, and UV rays from damaging the surface. Apply a fresh coat every one to three years, and you’ll slow down the growth of cracks, avoid pricey repairs, and keep the driveway looking sharp. A local professional can handle the job efficiently and ensure even coverage.

Material is the significant driver when it comes to the lifespan of a driveway. Asphalt stays strong for about 20 years, concrete lasts 30 to 40 years, and paver stones can last 50 to 100 years because you can swap out damaged bricks. With regular top-ups, a gravel drive can also reach the century mark. Knowing these timelines helps you map out long-term maintenance and replacement costs.

Repaving strips everything down and starts fresh, letting you change the layout or improve drainage before pouring new material. Resurfacing, on the other hand, adds a top layer over a solid base, giving you a facelift without the need for a complete demolition. Go with repaving when the base is failing; choose resurfacing when the structure is sound and you just need a new surface.
