Customers say: True professional

"Rich is a very friendly guy who explained what he was going to do and gave me an estimate. He came to look at the job on Saturday and repaired the Newell post that was broken and completely off the stairs and on Monday morning he installed it and cleaned up entirely and also tightened the stair rail by installing a bracket. When I got home from work and inspected the job done by Rich I was completely satisfied and so was my wife and we will use Rich again if we need to. Highly recommend his services."

Small jobs welcome

"We (my husband and I) hired Nick from Long Acre handyman to do a couple of handyman jobs this year. One was cleaning our dryer vent. He did a great job. Then we asked him to repair a few boards on our wooden deck. He did a great job with that as well. He is professional and reliable, and does good thorough work. We are pleased customers. We will continue to hire him for handyman jobs as needed and would recommend him."

"I have consistently sought the services of Manfredia Carpentry and have recommended them to my friends and neighbors in the Havertown area. Their work is always thorough, professional and garners fulsome praise from those who visit my home. Wally Manfredia has an excellent and responsive group of subcontractors for each particular specialty. He is always available by text or phone and will often perform same-day requests. He stands by his work and in fact guarantees it. I have needed mior repairs to such things as painting or cabinetry over the years which he has done and continues to do without additional charge. You can be certain that the work will ultimately be done to your satisfaction and to specifications. The company is also well known in the township and has never had any issues with obtaining necessary permits or variances. I recommend them highly, particularly as I have heard of others using different contractors who have not experienced the degree of professionalism I get from Manfredia. Do not hesitate to contact them."

"We had a great experience with Path Hardwood floors. Not only did they provide an affordable quote but they took care of everything we needed and did an excellent job on our flooring. They were much more flexible than other companies in terms of working with our schedule and needs. Allen was very pleasant throughout the project. Highly recommend!"

"Very well. The salesman was very professional; not pushy and didn't sell his company by putting other companies down. The installer was on time, courteous, professional and completed the work neatly and quickly."

"Montco was one of 3 fence installers we had out to give an estimate on installing a vinyl privacy fence in our yard. Bill (the owner, I believe) came and one of the first things he said was that we should just do wire along the back of the yard instead of vinyl since there is already a wall of evergreen trees there. It would save us a big chunk of money (probably about 2K) and also make the yard feel less boxed in. He was the only one of the 3 contractors to suggest this and it made us feel like he actually cared. He listened to our concerns about keeping the fence as low as possible to keep the dogs in and was the only contractor who seemed fully confident in his ability to get the fence installed on a sizable incline without stepping the panels."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Exton, PA

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
