"If you want to work with someone condescending, rude, confrontational, unprofessional, and whose contractors workmanship is probably the worst I have ever encountered in my 30 years of working with contractors, THIS IS YOUR GUY. I can ramble on about the false promises, the horrible workmanship, the constant delays, the lack of communication, the rude and confrontational text messages. I guarantee Mr. Shank will in fact respond to this review and try to flip the script and blame it all on me somehow. He talks very poorly about all his customers well at least the ones he doesn't like. Not sure what that is based on although I do have some idea what is based on. But he never made anything explicit, so I can't make accusations that he is a racist. So I am definitely not saying he is a racist because he didn't do anything racist. But if he was a racist it would explain why he didn't give two poops about doing good work for multiple projects I provided him. I also have multiple properties and was hoping to make Mr. Shank a lifelong contractor. In a nutshell, he has done 2 projects for me at 2 properties. One was installing a threshold for a glass enclosed shower stall. His crappy sub contractor (they are not employees) despite him saying they are employees, did not install any grouting on the threshold. Fast forward 1 year, and mold is popping up all around the threshold. Rather than dealing with this individual, I hired another contractor to fix up his mess. Second job, and my second mistake, I hired him for a full scale home renovation for around 50K. That project was an absolute disaster. He took 3 months to do what he promised to me verbally would be a 3 week job. I don't really want to spend 1 hour writing down all the crap he did wrong. I'll try so sum up the highlights. Ripped out old flooring, promised to make new flooring level after installing new concrete by using lasers. New flooring is totally not level and as bumpy as walking on your local trail. The shoe moldings around the flooring look like a child installed them. I had to argue with him to get him to regrout the bathroom which was in his contract in the first place. I can go on and on. For sure if you are someone that Mr. Shank likes and match his criteria of what he likes, whatever that could be I have no idea definitely not race related. He may do a great job for you and that may explain the great reviews. I myself had a horrible experience with Mr. Shank and his group of sub contractors who just plain do terrible work. Ignore my review or take it seriously, frankly this guy will keep getting business cause he's a great salesman. Even has a LinkedIN profile to show how professional he is. Epic scammer and fraud. Stay away."

"DO NOT use this company. I went through Lowes to have a composite deck built. Working with them was an absolute nightmare. It took them 3 months to even START the job. I discovered the reason for the delay is because when they filed the permit (which took them 6 weeks to do), the contractor's license was expired. It then took them another 5 weeks to update their license in order to get the permit. They ordered and installed a completely differently railing style than what was on the contract/design, then blamed me for the mistake. Rather than ordering a new product, they cut the existing one to make it work. I am now 9 months post project, and the railing has warped, the deck is sloped, and the overall quality is horrible. Worst of all, turns out they NEVER GOT IT INSPECTED! I learned that Lowes had to fire them due to MULTIPLE issues with the company. I am thankful I have Lowes to help rectify the issues, but if i didn't, I would be pursuing legal action against them!"

From our initial meeting to the completion of your project, our number one goal is to exceed your expectations. We install economical projects with great resell value along with large outdoor living staycations. When you choose to work with us, you get a project manager to communicate important information and oversee the installation of your project. Before we can begin construction, there are many tasks that must be completed. We do this efficiently by using project, customer service and communication tools and technologies along with a great staff that all share the same vision of excellence. Below are the steps we take to ensure you are 100% satisfied with your choice.
"I had 5 contractors bid my deck, HD came in with some fairly decent discounts and seemed very professional and dedicated. The design phase was fairly smooth, I chose the signature package with LED lights on the rails with the caveat that I would choose the colors after the samples were dropped off. I sent off an email after I chose the colors that I wanted to the POC that I was provided. Two weeks ahead of the scheduled start date they dropped off a series of pallets with all of the material on the side of my yard, after I called and questioned the timing and effect it would have on my grass, they moved up the start date by a week. Demo went well, except for the cleanup. I had to pick up several bags of trash and nails that were left behind and they damaged a downspout on a completely unrelated area of the house when dumping the old deck over my fence. The install seemed to be going fine until I looked at the colors of the decking and it was not what I had indicated in the previous email. I went ahead and went with the colors that were provided, they were fairly close, and I am somewhat ambivalent in regard to color. Things began to slide rapidly from here, I had 4 support pillars previously with a downspout running down one into a drain that runs under my patio, which is brick. They had a 3-pillar design that completely disregarded the drain and the downspout. When I pointed this out, I was assured they would run a line under the patio and tie it in to the drain. The deck itself was put together in fairly short order, about 3 days. I had several discrepancies with the install, one board was rip-cut and very jagged and the V supports were not aligned to the edge of the support beams, no right angles and mis-aligned. The PM assured me someone would be out to fix it shortly. We are now 2 weeks into the build and 4 weeks with the construction material laying in my yard, grass is dead at this point and I am getting frustrated. They come out and fix the mangled board and the V supports and the deck itself is done. I still have a damaged down spout and my patio has a gaping hole with my drain sticking up out of the ground. About a week goes by with ZERO communication from HD, I’m outside looking around and notice a 3 inch gash in my paddle board. At this point I email the owner and offer to go with another contractor to fix my patio, damage to the spout and tell him about the p/b. He offered to buy me a new p/b, that was nice but missing the point entirely, he was aggressive and agitated, mentioning several time “I built this company” and only concerned about getting paid. I fixed the p/b myself. He assures me that someone will be out ASAP to fix my patio and that they will find similar brick for the repair. I explained that that particular brick was the only option and provided the information where it could be purchased. About a week later the patio crew came out, tied the drain in and laid the brick as it was before, leaving me with about 60 extra bricks to store, including the ones that were partially cut and completely useless to me. Inexplicably there is also white spray paint on a 4 brick section next to one of the pillars In summary, the deck itself is about 4 stars. Service, communication and execution of the project are one star, hence the 2-star rating. I do not recommend this company."

"If I could give this company a 6 out of 5 stars I would! They did a fantastic job overhauling my mother's deck, back patio, fencing, and front portico. All of the work was absolutely essential for safety and structural reasons, and I'm so glad I chose OSSA to do the work. My mother has Alzheimer's, which presented additional issues, but the entire crew was incredibly kind, respectful, and understanding of the unique challenges they faced. They were responsive and kept me aware of everything regarding the job along the way. My mother is so pleased, and I have the peace of mind that all of her outdoor space is safe, beautiful, and accessible. I will be hiring OSSA to do some work in my own home, as I look to make necessary improvements in the future. I've told everyone I know how how wonderful they are. 6 out of 5 stars!"

"We contracted with E&S Hime Remodeling to convert a laundry area into a pantry. Elser listened to our design plan, offered his professional opinion and together we decided on a final plan. Elser came back with a very reasonable price and we agreed to go forward. We very very pleased with the outcome and Elser’s crew was professional, courteous and very clean. I will definitely use E&S again and highly recommend them to others."

After interviewing several companies we picked HCS. They were not the cheapest option but not the most expensive either. They had a good project coordinator who gave us several options, answered all of our questions and followed up with any additional information that we needed. We were amazed at the attention to detail. Now we have a beautiful home!"

The ideal depth for a root cellar depends on your local frost line and climate conditions. The goal is to achieve a consistent temperature between 32°F and 60°F year-round. In warmer southern regions, you may need deeper excavation or supplemental cooling systems, while northern areas focus more on preventing freezing.
Understanding your soil composition and water table is essential for determining appropriate depth and drainage needs to maintain a stable environment for your stored produce.
Most municipalities require permits for root cellar construction, particularly for projects involving excavation or structural modifications. Permit costs range from $1,200 to $2,000, depending on your location.
The application process often requires submitting detailed plans showing drainage solutions and structural elements. Checking local regulations early in your planning process helps avoid potential fines or construction delays, especially for projects near property lines or those requiring utility connections.
Professional root cellar construction spans several weeks, with timelines varying based on design complexity and weather conditions. The process includes initial excavation, foundation work, structural construction, ventilation installation, and finishing touches. Permit processing and inspections add to the timeline.
Working with experienced professionals results in more efficient completion compared to DIY approaches, though seasonal factors and contractor availability can affect scheduling.
Concrete represents the most common material choice for permanent root cellars due to its durability and moisture resistance. For above-ground structures, properly sealed pressure-treated lumber offers good performance at lower cost.
Effective insulation is crucial regardless of construction type, with different materials suited to various climate conditions. Quality doors with proper seals help maintain consistent internal conditions, while corrosion-resistant hardware ensures longevity in humid environments.
Most produce stores work best at humidity levels between 80% and 90%. A hygrometer (costing approximately $25) helps monitor conditions accurately. For low humidity, placing containers of water or damp materials in the cellar can increase moisture levels.
When humidity rises too high, improving air circulation through adjustable vents helps reduce excess moisture. Different crops may require varying humidity levels, so organizing your storage accordingly helps optimize preservation. Regular maintenance prevents condensation buildup and potential mold issues.
