"I was given sound advice on what they could and could not do for my drainage problem unlike a lot of other companies I contacted. The workers informed me and cleaned up after work was completed."

"Basement Doctor work crews were prompt and polite, accommodated my requests, and cleaned up beyond my expectations. There were, however, significant problems. Estimate was incomplete -- need for dehumidifier was not emphasized until after the work was in progress so was not in the contract. Cement dust was bad enough to injure my lung. However, Basement Doctor made what seemed like reasonable effort to contain the dust. The same might have happened no matter who did the work. After phase one was done, there was dampness along the crawlspace wall where drainage had been installed. I was told that it was not wet. In order for it to be wet, there had to be standing water. When examining the conditions in order make an estimate for phase 2, my project manager looked at the crawlspace drainage that had been installed in phase 1, he saw something that caused him to call the production manager, then told me that there was a problem with the drainpipe as installed in phase 1 and that it would be replaced in phase 2. This left me with worry about whether the rest of the work had been done correctly. When phase 2 was complete, I expressed disappointment that the appearance of the encapsulation did not live up to expectations. Primarily, the taped joint between the material used on the floor and part way up the wall and the silver insulated material used on the was not level, and was wavy to an unsightly extent The white material billowed out from the wall into the floor space rather than going down the wall consistently then out onto the floor. The project manager said that Basement Doctor guaranteed the function of the work, not its appearance. The foreman said that the white material would, over time conform to the wall. (It hasn't.) The project manager said the production manager (director?) would call me. It took three months and a nasty letter from me for that call to be received. When he came to my home the production manager reiterated that Basement Doctor stood behind the function of their work, not its appearance -- at least for the type of work done in my home. He said that there had been no problem with the drainage pipe that had been replaced, but that it had been replaced at my request. At that point I wondered who I should believe. He did improve the appearance of the encapsulation by adding tape so the joint was no longer wavy."

"This company is a go to company. I had some large cracks in my foundation due to some prior water damage. I had another company come in for an estimate and they wanted 3 times more money and much more invasive plan. The Basement Guys told me that it was not necessary to do all that and also provides a lifetime warranty. They were very efficient, thorough and very professional. They also cleaned up and were great to work with. They work for the company and do not subcontract. A+ company!"

"Great experience overall! I do a lot of research before doing anything and so ask a lot of questions and take a long time deciding things. This was NEVER a problem with Leslie. She was always happy to help, left me alone to look, answer questions and give good suggestions. Once I finally decided on some countertop, I was on the list for installation. Guys who showed up to install were quick and efficient. Unfortunately, the countertop had been sized incorrectly or a number transposed so the countertop had to be redone. This was not really a problem to me because the kitchen was progressing fine. However GJ insisted on giving me a discount on the re-install even though they were the ones that lost money. Thank you for that kindness! Great experience working with GJ on everything too. Once installed, my kitchen counter was and is beautiful! Perfectly matching the custom cabinets put in by Mike Sizemore, who was recommended by Counter Culture and who I also highly recommend. Overall A++ to all. In essense, I got an entire kitchen designed and installed for the price of materials and labor. Love my kitchen two years on. Ditto my bathroom!"

"These men grasped the concept of what I had in mind immediately, and set out to exceed my expectations.  They were on time and budget, and seemed to really care that the remodel was done exactly right.  They could not have done a better job if they had been working on their own home. <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Flatwoods, KY

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
