Customers say: Terrific value

"Alexy did a phenomenal job for us. He replaced our hideous old stair risers and treads and built a beautiful bookcase where our broken banister used to be. He also did an incredible job matching the detail on the bookcase to the detail on our wood fireplace mantle. He was fast, reliable, and gave us a great price. We will definitely hire him again."

"Two jobs so far from Hashtag: A beautiful cedar fence and also a new garage entry door and rebuild of the steps leading to the garage. Really like the detailed estimate and the excellent communication throughout the process. The quality and craftsmanship is top tier."

"We had a great experience with I and Sons replacing our very dated and unsafe railings and banisters. From the start, they were extremely responsive and easy to work with. He came in with a fair quote and was flexible with scheduling. After the work was done, we discovered that the preexisting structural components were insufficient so they had to go back in and reinforce some parts, which they did willingly - they really wanted to make sure that we were happy with the project. They were communicative throughout the process and always very friendly and thoughtful of our household while they worked. We're happy with the result and the whole process to get there, strongly recommend them!"

"Eugene worked out of the Vancouver office. He was professional, knowledgeable and efficient. He was very good at communicating with us and educating us as he went along. Our wood floor looks beautiful and we can't say enough good things about it. He had to work around our fireplace tile and do some creative trim work. He is meticulous yet fast at his job. He is very fair with his pricing, as well. We're very happy"

"Walt assessed the condition of a toilet and determined it would need to be replaced (as I had expected).  He and Tammy went to Home Depot and picked up a toilet (the price of the toilet is not included in the above), which was a huge help.  While Walt removed the old toilet and installed the new, Tammy worked to remove old caulking and recaulk the bathtub.  They took the old toilet and the box for the new toilet with them, leaving me with a renewed bathroom and no mess. <br /> Walt and Tammy are a fantastic team and I will not hestitate to hire them again.  I currently am building my "Walt and Tammy List." <br />"

"This review is long overdue! This was our first remodel project and Charles made it painless for us. Not only did Charles do an amazing job with our remodel and our beautiful new bathroom, he communicated with me to make sure I knew when he'd be there, and showed up when he said he would. If we ran into something that didn't work, he came up with a solution. This guy worked his butt off and did beautiful work. I'm so glad our first experience with a contractor was with Charles."

"This company was easy to get a hold of, good at getting back me, did amazing work, and is someone I would look to hire again. I had pieces and sections of baseboards that were missing and or hopelessly dysfunctional. A Better Carpenter came in figured out all the details of matching old trim and making all look like new again. They were also efficient, polite, and fast. I had to call a lot of contractors and handymen who didn't work out before hand. It worked out though because I was very happy with this company and its work."

"I cannot speak highly enough of Tom and Brad Green of Colonial Restorations. We have lived in our antique house for 16 years now, and like most old homes, some of its previous repairs were good, some not so good. Tom Green worked on this house for its previous owners, and his work was, by far, the best in the house. So, we continued to use Colonial - Tom, then Tom and Brad - as we learned the ropes about caring for an old house - our first house, old or new. Over the years, they have replaced sills and posts and beams, and rebuilt parts of our loose stone foundation. Most recently, they replaced the last original posts in our basement, (one of which was a tree trunk still with bark on it), including pouring new custom footings, in advance of our finally cementing the dirt floor. The work here is never easy - nothing is level, nothing is square - but the Greens' end result has always been beautiful - strong and made to last. Their prices are fair and without hidden costs....maybe not the lowest bid you might get, but you know it's a real bid that they will stand behind. They triage projects for us, giving us an idea of what other items will likely need attention in the next few years. We're not done with this house yet....we've never won the lottery, and there's always another repair..... and plan to use them again soon. I feel confident knowing that the next owners of this house, whoever they might be, will see the quality of the work and know that we cared enough to have the right people help us with the ongoing repair and maintenance of a 275+ year old house. I am a real person, a real customer, with no ties to the company, and was more than happy to write this review."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Forest Grove, OR

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
