"Joseph is a true artisan in wood craftsmanship. He built a custom set of stairway posts and ballisters and handrails. He was very attentive to details and the end result is exquisite, truly a custom job I will always be proud of every time a visitor enters my home and the first thing they will notice is this magnificent work of art. I have already made arrangements to have Joseph work on other future projects in my home."

"Had two loose cabinet doors. Contractor is unable to find correct replacement hinges as they are no longer being made. Cabinet doors are not loose any more, but they are misaligned and not staying closed. Paid extra for hinges, two of which could not be installed as the doors would not be able to close."

"Roman is very detailed and knowledgeable. I've never had a contractor who tried that hard to understand the job even before coming for a quote. Very easy to get a hold of as well which is rare for contractors from this site. Would highly recommend."

"Marcin OF Martin Hardwood Flooring did a fantastic job! The floor looks 100% better then when they were first installed. There were spaces between boards, chips where the finish was gone and lots of dents. the wood came with a very high polish which showed the imperfections and Marcin made the wood look fabulous. He finished the work in two days and we decided to let the finish cure an extra night so on the third day his crew came to lift the stove, rerigerator and table back into the kitchen. His price was the best out of four and if you want someone that does a really great job, he is the person to hire. Doorways, cabinets, and counters were all covered with plastic! I could not have asked for more of anything! Padding rugs were even put down for the temporary placement of my stove and refrigerator in my living room."

"I hired Professional Home Improvement to replace the siding on my house. They did an amazing job! I had talked to three contractors, and the difference with this contractor was immediately noticeable. From the very first meeting, the owner sat down and explained everything involved in the process. He showed me lots of pictures and did a really great job pointing out the high level of quality that I should expect. They did not disappoint! I have received so many compliments on the new siding. My family was amazed at how it completely transformed the look of the house. The price was competitive. They were not the highest nor the lowest bidder. The high level of quality, the excellent communication with the team, and the overall work ethic of their lead installer definitely made this the right contractor choice for me. The owner, Mal, is extremely personable and was a pleasure to work with. I worked with several contractors as I restored my house, and my experience with Professional Home Improvement has been the best experience by far. I would highly recommend this company to both family and friends. They really did an excellent job!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Fox Lake, IL

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
