"Nick and Dori were wonderful to work with! They were kind and responsive and so, so thorough. Our radon levels were super high and they were able to install the mitigation system efficiently and professionally. I highly recommend them for mitigation, but also just for testing and any other questions even if you donâ t need mitigation. Overall, a wonderful experience. I wish no one had radon problems, but if you do, youâ re lucky to get to work with this company."

"Short-term and long-term radon tests in the basement yielded readings of 5.6 and 5.1. Steve Daigle did an initial inspection and developed a sub-slab depressurization system to reduce the high radon level in the soil beneath the basement. The price for the system was fair - around the lower end of the averages. Steve did the work himself, except for the wiring of the fan motor to the house electrical system. The job took about 5 hours and went very smoothly. Three holes had to be made - one in the basement floor, one through the sill wall into the garage and one through the roof of the garage. All of the work was very clean and all debris was taken away. Steve was always checking to see if there were any questions before, during and after the installation and provided timely replies to any questions or issues. He also did the paperwork for the electrical permit. I was very pleased with Steve's work and the best part is that the post-mitigation radon test was a level of .5 - that's point five. <br />"

"this is the second home inspection we had terry perform in less than 4 weeks, his inspection provided us the info we needed to make an informed decision on a home that we were about to purchase, which would have been a big mistake. he is excellent, through, informative, educational. cannot say enough about his professional approach. <br />"

"They originally installed a reverse osmosis water filtration system. It pushes the water through these microfilm filters. We have well water so we high arsenic levels in our well. They do it once a year. We've had to have them come out on a weekend and service, that is about $100. This time it was expensive. It was a major replacement. They're expensive but they're the only ones in the area that do what they do."

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"Dan performed air testing for Radon, and water testing for a wide variety of possible contaminants as part of pre-purchase building inspection. Responsiveness was fabulous, results were quick and very easy to understand, including very clear information on what the various EPA limits are for each item. The realtor said he's the best provider of this service he's ever seen, and he's been in the business for at least 10 years."

"The job was to remove the mold that had formed near three disconnected vent pipes that passed through the attic and then to reconnect the pipes. They were prompt and remarkably tidy. Because they were dealing with mold spores they completely sealed off the room that gave them access to the attic. (Of course, because the room was sealed off while they worked and because I would have had to borrow a ladder to access the attic after they left, I have never actually laid eyes on the work they did! I believe that the work was done as promised.)"

FAQs for radon gas abatement projects in Freeport, ME

The only way to know whether your home or water supply contains radon is to schedule a professional test. A qualified radon inspector will collect samples, deliver lab-verified results, and explain the findings for $150 to $800. Once you know your exact levels, you and your radon mitigation pro can choose the right system and tackle the problem before it affects your family’s health.

Both roles tackle radon, but they focus on different steps. Inspectors test your home, interpret the results, and determine whether levels exceed EPA guidelines. Mitigation pros design and install the system that lowers those levels. Some companies do both, but the skills and equipment differ, so always verify that the person you hire is properly certified for the specific service you need.

Installing a mitigation unit fixes radon problems by reducing indoor gas levels to established safe standards. A system designed and installed by a mitigation expert, tailored to your home's specific layout and foundation, guarantees effective radon reduction. This expert installation ensures consistent performance over time while safeguarding your indoor air quality.

Open windows and doors do not reduce radon levels because they trigger a pressure imbalance that draws radon-laden air into your home. This practice fails to control radon concentration and can even worsen the issue. An active suction mitigation system provides a proven, safe, and effective solution to reliably reduce radon levels.

Radon mitigation systems generally last between 10 and 30 years, depending on system type and maintenance. Passive systems endure the longest because they have no moving parts, whereas active systems, which use a fan, require fan replacement every 5 to 10 years. System components, such as PVC pipes, seals, and fittings, can remain effective for decades when paired with periodic inspections and proper maintenance.

Radon mitigation systems consume between 300 and 3,000 kWh of electricity per year, depending on fan size and system design. On average, an active radon fan draws 100 to 300 watts continuously, which translates to roughly 876 kWh annually, and adds $30 to $300 to your energy bill each year. Choosing a high-efficiency fan and ensuring tight sealing around pipes helps minimize these ongoing costs.
