"They were through and completed everything in a timely fashion. They kept me informed on what they were doing and on what was needed to remodel my property. I highly recommend them. They could do everything that was needed. In fact I don't think there is anything that they can't do. They were a pleasure to work with."

"Islander gave helpful suggestions on the remodel. He and his crew always showed up at the time they said they would and did a good job cleaning up after their day was done. They were courteous, knowledgeable and did great work. We would hire them again for any other projects we may have in the future."

"Peter was very fast and always prompt. After measuring on a Sunday, he had the custom door made on Monday. I absolutely love my door. It was custom made and it’s pretty large door! The price was reasonable!"

"We got quotes from a few other contractors and all were pretty much in the same price range. Our neighbors up the street went with RFMC a couple years ago and were very satisfied with the results. Their patio turned out beautiful and I'm happy to say ours did too. The office staff are friendly and the construction crew were professional and courteous. They came out when they said they would, they finished the job when they said they would, and they cleaned up before they left. Couldn't ask for more. Will be looking to these guys when we remodel kitchen and baths."

"I only had a gentleman from Down Home Construction and Renovation here once and I would have him back. I'm glad he came. He's very personable and knowledgeable. I liked him enough even just with that one meeting that I took his business card and put it in my business card drawer. Those people that go in there are the only ones I would like to contact again. I do know he's a good electrician because I watched him when he did the work here. We talked about other things and he seemed to have some good ideas. He wasn't outrageous as far as he was charging. Majority of the people charge travel time and some of them are good enough to say if you can wait, they have a job to do there so they can do the job all at the same time. I said I'm no big hurry but I need to do these stuffs. He said he has a job coming up next week so he suggested he'll come Tuesday that way I won't pay any extra charge for him to come. That works for me. I really appreciate it. Most electricians charge you a lot and some of them live right here. He was very reasonable and that helped because he knew when he was coming and it would save me a little bit. He was very nice, called me back right away and when he came here, he was right on time. He did the work exactly how I requested it and it ended up looking good. I like him and I would like him back."

"Thomas came to give me an estimate on installing insulation on a family room ceiling. We set a time for an appointment. Thomas was on time and called when he was on this way. After look at the room and discussing what I was looking for, Thomas didn't think the integrity of the ceiling was such that it could bare the additional weight. He made the recommendation to have insulation applied to the roof. Unfortunately, his company does not do this type of work. I really appreciate his honesty and his recommendation."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Fresno, CA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
