"I received my radon results in a timely manner. I did not hire them specifically, (so, I cannot say I would hire them again) the local company contracted them for this service. The home inspector I hired, handled this service for me and included the results in his report."

"I hired 1st choice for a home inspection in the Knoxville area as a home buyer. Thomas Crews was my inspector. My experience was fantastic! The most important thing is that the inspection was excellent and thorough. I had several things I wanted the inspector to look for. After his inspection, Thomas called me for around 15 minutes on the phone to go over the things I asked about and to tell me a bit more. When I saw the inspection report, I was amazed at how much he was able to inspect and document during his time slot. Importantly, it was very well written up and explained. I am not a first time home buyer, so I have seen two previous inspection reports. This report was worth much more. I hired 1st choice based on seeing that they had almost entirely positive reviews everywhere. For a company of this size, avoiding negative reviews is extremely difficult. I found that they were professional in conduct and responsiveness. The pricing was fair -- $395 for inspection and $150 for a 2 day Radon test. The Radon cost is a bit higher than other companies, but is a better test because it is 2 days of continuous monitoring with professional grade equipment and the inspector has to go back to get the equipment. In summary, I think is very likely the best inspection company in Knoxville. Comparable price with superior, professional, and knowledgable service."

"He conducted a very complete and detailed inspection of a house we are looking to purchase..  He started on the roof and worked his way around the property and then through the interior.  He took numerous pictures of all areas of  concern.  Upon completion he sat down with us and went over each item and his recommendations.  Within 2 days we had a very detailed written report, we he sent us electronically,  showing all the areas he found with a picture of the item, what the problem was and what need to be down to correct the problem.  He also did a Radon test and arraigned for a termite/pest inspection and provided written reports of both of these. <br />"

"I found Mr. Taylor's information in EPA website for radon remediation system. He is one of few certified expert in the middle TN. He and his crew did great job on the vapor barrier. Even though the radon level is still under testing process, I believe he did correct job on it. I will come back to report the level of before-and-after when winter is coming.( For educational purpose, the radon level in winter time is higher than summer time according to my google-research. <br /> <br />"

FAQs for radon gas abatement projects in Athens, TN

The only way to know whether your home or water supply contains radon is to schedule a professional test. A qualified radon inspector will collect samples, deliver lab-verified results, and explain the findings for $150 to $800. Once you know your exact levels, you and your radon mitigation pro can choose the right system and tackle the problem before it affects your family’s health.

Both roles tackle radon, but they focus on different steps. Inspectors test your home, interpret the results, and determine whether levels exceed EPA guidelines. Mitigation pros design and install the system that lowers those levels. Some companies do both, but the skills and equipment differ, so always verify that the person you hire is properly certified for the specific service you need.

Installing a mitigation unit fixes radon problems by reducing indoor gas levels to established safe standards. A system designed and installed by a mitigation expert, tailored to your home's specific layout and foundation, guarantees effective radon reduction. This expert installation ensures consistent performance over time while safeguarding your indoor air quality.

Open windows and doors do not reduce radon levels because they trigger a pressure imbalance that draws radon-laden air into your home. This practice fails to control radon concentration and can even worsen the issue. An active suction mitigation system provides a proven, safe, and effective solution to reliably reduce radon levels.

Radon mitigation systems generally last between 10 and 30 years, depending on system type and maintenance. Passive systems endure the longest because they have no moving parts, whereas active systems, which use a fan, require fan replacement every 5 to 10 years. System components, such as PVC pipes, seals, and fittings, can remain effective for decades when paired with periodic inspections and proper maintenance.

Radon mitigation systems consume between 300 and 3,000 kWh of electricity per year, depending on fan size and system design. On average, an active radon fan draws 100 to 300 watts continuously, which translates to roughly 876 kWh annually, and adds $30 to $300 to your energy bill each year. Choosing a high-efficiency fan and ensuring tight sealing around pipes helps minimize these ongoing costs.
