"So like a number of other house, we had sinking front concrete steps. Our sizable front stairs had sunk about 6 inches and pull the attached walk with it. It got to the point we just had to have them replaced. I checked out various options for having them mud-jacked, but my concern was that that would not really fix the issue for the long term and they would just end up sinking again. After getting several bids we went with Tavis at Quality Concrete and Masonry. They weren't the cheapest bid but seemed the most trustworthy and had the best plan to make sure the problem did not re-occur. Tavis started on a Tuesday and was essentially work complete by Saturday. His work was very high quality. Because of the site, amount of concrete, etc. he used 1.5" rebar instead of the standard 0.5" rebar to tie the steps to the house. ( I've never even seen 1.5" rebar before.) Site was left clean each day and the final product exceeded our expectations."

"Kenny responded promptly to my query for help.  He was very busy, but provided an estimate when he said he would.  He showed up for the work when he said he would.  The job took two days - Remove/grind out existing mortar (what was left) in day one and repoint the entire steps group the next.  Everything looks better than new.  Positively perfect.     <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />If I ever need masonry work again, I'll be giving Kenny a call.  I've seen his work and it's great. <br />"

"Mr. Ferriss is an artist, a professional, and wonderful to work with. I had a disaster of a backyard, and he designed and installed a beautiful patio with fire pit, an adjacent garden and gazebo, and appropriate and tasteful lighting. He further added definition and landscaping to the yard. His work reflected attention to detail and customer satisfaction. His work is like he is building it for himself. So much pride goes into his work. We were very pleased with his work and have enjoyed it immensely every day since. You will not be disappointed."

"I had a retaining wall that had broken pretty badly on the corner over the winter, a step that puddles and some cracks that needed repairing. Dennis was fantastic to work with from the very beginning. He came out promptly to give me an estimate and was very reasonably priced. He explained everything to me so I would understand. We had some rain issues scheduling (nothing to do with him, just bad storms for about a week) and he kept in touch and was very considerate of my time. When he came to do the actual repair he was fun to work with, knowledgeable and kept me posted on what was going on the whole time. He was so nice and did a wonderful job. His work was amazing and really looks great. I would definitely hire Dennis again and again."

"The quote was timely.  The work was performed on time. It was a good thing that we stayed around to keep the crew from making some mistakes in the layout. Essentially, we supervised the crew.  There was very little supervision by the company's management.  The work crew was great. They worked hard in some of the hotest heat of the year.  They listened to us and took care of the layout dveiations immediately."

"I can't say enough great things about Steve.  I am currently deployed and dealing with Steve from a distance has been as convenient as possible.  He has kept me informed and has worked closely with the person watching my house during this time.  I have seen numerous pictures and heard such positive things about his work.  I am BLOWN away by the pictures of the new door he installed.  The trim is unbelievable, it looks amazing!  The entire house looks fantastic.  Steve truly went above and beyond.  He noticed that our shutters were the wrong size and he took it upon himself to order us all new shutters, at no cost.  The siding on the house had gotten extremely dirty since leaving it months ago and Steve got a buddy of his to power wash it for us, at no cost.  I'm not sure if it is because Steve is prior military, or just a really great person, but he did all of this to make sure our house was looking good for our return.  I heard that Steve made sure everything was done right before moving on, was extremely knowledgeable about his craft, and has excellent advice and ideas.  Everyone who worked at the house was really nice and our house sitter said he would hire them all himself.  Steve also referred us to someone to install flooring and even brought him over to the house to get us a quote.  We also hired him (Morland?) and are very thankful for that referral as he did an excellent job!  Steve was quick to respond all around.  He was easy to get ahold of, he came out to the house quickly, and he got started quickly.  It is evident that he truly takes pride in his work and company.  Thank you so much Steve! <br />"

"I love the platform and the deck  The deck was actually improved in that it was built up to standards for present recommendations.  The platform was better than I expected in that a step all along the front was added for my safety and esthetics.   Great job! Great price. <br />"

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Gloucester, VA

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
