He told me, while pointing to the valve at the top of my water heater, that I needed to open and close the valve a couple of times each year in order to keep it from sticking. <br /> I followed that advice, and opened the release valve twice using a bucket to catch the water. After closing the valve, I left town for a long weekend. Upon my return, I found water all around the hot water tank from a slow leak due to that valve. When I called my local plumber, they explained that the emergency relief valve should not be opened manually. It is designed to open once, and then does not reseal. The cost to replace the valve was minor ($75). But I was completely shocked that Mr. Rooter would recommend a maintenance practice that is clearly not standard and certain to result in further repairs. Perhaps they thought I would call them back again? <br />"
