"We had wanted to add a deck to our home for years. We finally were in a place to do it this year. We chose Deck Guardian and we couldn’t be happier. Every step of the process was painless, and the staff we dealt with were amazing. The first person we dealt with, Ian, came preppy and made suggestions for what our deck could look like. He thoroughly explained the process. Once all the permits had been received, building began and we were so blessed to have Roberto and Antonio as our builders. Their work was impeccable. The result was we have a deck that was entirely worth the wait. It is beautiful, solidly built, and the envy of our neighbors. In short, we couldn’t be happier or recommend Deck Guardian highly enough."

Small jobs welcome

"I had K&X gut renovate two bathrooms and partition bedroom including building a new walk-in closet. I made it clear to them that I am picky :) and I expected professional work. They did an amazing job and I will use them again next year for a kitchen remodel."

"We needed to replace a patch of our living room ceiling due to damage from a water leak upstairs. We contacted C&B, who responded and quoted us a price quickly. The price was fair for a multi-day job, they got it done within a week, and they even helped us repaint the ceiling. Very professional, courteous, and trustworthy. We'd strongly recommend!"

"Nixon repaired two very extensive cracks in our Corian sink that others did not want to deal with. He also fixed more problems that we were not aware of but could readily see when he showed them to us. Nixon saved us the cost of replacing the whole Corian kitchen counter top and potentially future large water damage. He is easy to deal with and provides prompt service."

"A2Z completely replaced an old 22 x 13 pressure treated deck. The new deck is so much better than the one it replaced however. The original was merely utilitarian. Weslyn and crew s version exhibits amazing furniture-grade craftsmanship and they volunteered to add finishing touches that make all the difference. Using beautiful, lasting, hard-to-work-with IPE wood, they finished the work on schedule and within budget. They cleaned up well each day. The deck decidedly plussed up our backyard. I highly recommend A2Z!"

Customers say: Quick response

"Nathan does tremendous work, at a fair price, and in a timely manner. We had a section of our exterior rot out under our siding and he made the necessary repairs with a quick turn around, and also took steps to mitigate the risk of this issue occuring again. We would recommend Nathan to our friends and family any day."

"Milton is the absolute best! He is a talented carpenter, and there is little he cannot do. Milton has helped us with several projects we've had including rebuilding part of our deck when we removed a hot tub, enclosing part of our basement to create an office, painting the full exterior of our home with necessary updates to siding, and replaced all of our windows. I have referred Milton to many friends and neighbors and they have all been thrilled with his work. Milton always arrives on time, when you expect him. He works efficiently and quietly and beyond his talent, is a first-rate person and a delight to interact with. I can't recommend Milton highly enough!"

"Simply put, Bill builds from the heart. We had a major renovation that entailed reconfiguring the entire 2nd floor with the addition of a bed and bathroom. We also had our 1st floor reconfigured with a wall removal and a master ensuite established. With a project of this size there are challenges and Bill and his team worked as professionals through each one. The quality of build that Bill and his team establishes is top notched and stands with the best in the business, We did have some hurdles with finishing details, however, with continued communication with Bill and some realignment, the project came out better than our expectations. We're very happy with our overall results."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Norwalk, CT

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
