"Sam is a consummate professional and perfectionist that takes great pride in his work. His employees are equally skilled, polite and professional. When Sam commits to doing a new job he schedules the start date upon completion of his existing job. He starts a job and finishes it and does not bounce around from one job to another. The guys started working everyday at 7am/7:30am and worked until 5pm/6pm weather permitting. This work cannot be done in the rain and the temperature must be consistently above 45 degrees to start. We met Sam at the stone place to pick the veneers and bluestone for the steps and pavers for the walkway. Sam started demolition on April 17th and finished on May 3rd, 2018. " Initially, we contacted the owner Scott Whitelaw in March 2016. Eventually we agreed on the June start time, in June the project started as planned. We needed to have our concrete and brick front steps repaired and replaced with granite slabs.  The concrete was repaired and slabs replace and the concrete was stained. I was concerned about getting the right kind of stain color for the overall look of the project, and Scott worked very well and very patiently with me to see that we were satisfied. Once I was able to select the brick product the brick walkway was laid exactly to our expectations. We required a curve in the walkway and Scott was able to meet our expectations. An enormous amount of work, and then they had to remove 12" of solid concrete that was dumped outside the garage and which would interfere with the new floor. "Went very well from introduction to final payment. Dhimiter recommended reasonable approaches to replacing the degraded walk that both fit the circumstances and our sensibilities. He and his assistant worked without complaint or requote despite the uncertainty of what was under everything, in this case a massive concrete foundation that needed modification They even straightened the granite curbstones acting as retaining wall along the front of the yard. Dhimiter threw in nicely patching the cracked grout exterior to the kitchen. (We have a brick house.)
We have had several neighbors come by and compliment the way the path came out. It does now look agreeably like the entrance to a public library.
Somerville can be a tough place to get masonry work done the way you'd want. The town suffers from years of hack renovation, which has created a context for more of the same that can be hard to overcome. Despite that, the vinyl and aluminum siding has been progressively replaced with nicer wood trim as Somerville has gotten more gentrified, and you see a lot of pavers replacing blacktopped driveways. But the original "old world" styles of masonry work have been relatively difficult to reinstitute; who are you going to get to do it? My advice is: ask Dhimiter.
