"Rivera Concrete Paving's $8,500 bid became $11,000. Owner Magdiel Rivera adds charges after you're committed and doesn't follow through after payment. Cost increases: I mentioned roots upfront - he said equipment could handle it, then charged $450. Said grading unnecessary, then created false urgency claiming we HAD to grade before concrete. Later said could grade after. Added $1,800. Crew broke drainage pipes, charged me $250. Couldn't move AC condenser despite my asking during estimate. Payment tactics: Said pay "when satisfied." Then requested half early, then full payment before done. When I said work incomplete, he asked "Don't you trust me?" then broke promises. Broken promises: Walkway cured wrong, no follow-up. $1,800 grading included 3-month landscaping - no communication. Promised debris cleanup, later said not responsible. Damaged 4-month fence, couldn't repair properly, paid $300 after pressure. Dismisses costs at estimate, adds them later. Makes promises, then excuses."

"American Asphalt Maintenance tore out my old asphalt driveway and put it in a new one. Rob was great to work with. From the time he came to give me an estimate, he showed that he cared about the customer. He explained everything to me. They were prompt and courteous. The price was in line with other estimates I received. I downgraded them on responsiveness because I called twice and told them if they couldn't pave the driveway that week to let me know so I could do some rescheduling. They never called. It wasn't until I called them the next week that Naomi explained that the asphalt plant hadn't opened yet. I courtesy call to let me know they weren't coming that week would have been great."

"From start to finish of my project PaveStone Brick Paving was there every step of the way. I had a small patio installed in my town home. Sergio from PaveStone took care of all the permitting and associations requirements. He met with me to pick out colors and showed me the layout of the project so I had no concerns on what was being done. Sergio opened the job with his crew and they were very clean, organized and respectful. I am so happy with my new patio!! I would highly recommend PaveStone Brick Paving."

"After I called Dan came out and checked out our driveway. Within three days we had a written estimate for the work. I called the office to set up a time for the work to be done. Dan then gave me a call and estimated the work would be done the week of June 20th. On June 17th Dan again called and confirned they would be out on the afternoon of the 20th. The weather did not cooperate for the work to be accomplished on the 20th but Dan called early in the day and explained and said they would be out the next day. By the time arrived home from work on the 21st our driveway was repaired. Fantastic work!"

"Mr. Zarlengo gave us an estimate which only varied slightly because we asked him to cover a bit more area than the original estimate.  His crew removed all the existing asphalt and some very large tree roots which were causing our drive to buckle badly.  They then added quite a bit of rock underlayer and graded it well.  They allowed it to settle, then came back and regraded.  This was allowed to settle, then 2 1/2 inches of asphalt (at least) were poured and graded.  The entire crew was very professional, worked well, and we love our driveway.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Zarlengo to anyone or to use them again. <br />"

FAQs for asphalt paving installation projects in Highland Park, IL

Most driveways wrap up in roughly a week. Allow two to three days for installation, followed by an additional two to three days for the surface to cure. Concrete and asphalt follow this timeline, whereas a gravel job often finishes more quickly. Laying out the schedule upfront makes it easier to plan your week and your budget.

Sealer prevents water, salt, and UV rays from damaging the surface. Apply a fresh coat every one to three years, and you’ll slow down the growth of cracks, avoid pricey repairs, and keep the driveway looking sharp. A local professional can handle the job efficiently and ensure even coverage.

Material is the significant driver when it comes to the lifespan of a driveway. Asphalt stays strong for about 20 years, concrete lasts 30 to 40 years, and paver stones can last 50 to 100 years because you can swap out damaged bricks. With regular top-ups, a gravel drive can also reach the century mark. Knowing these timelines helps you map out long-term maintenance and replacement costs.

Repaving strips everything down and starts fresh, letting you change the layout or improve drainage before pouring new material. Resurfacing, on the other hand, adds a top layer over a solid base, giving you a facelift without the need for a complete demolition. Go with repaving when the base is failing; choose resurfacing when the structure is sound and you just need a new surface.
