"The actual work, once done, was done well. However, there were many setbacks along the way. The contractor had to wait weeks for the ordered parts, which is understandable. However, there were a lot of other issues during the process that seemed unprofessional and avoidable. Once the parts were in, and the job was scheduled, I was told the week of the job that I had been given the wrong date, and it would be the following week. When that day came, I was told they had car trouble, and it was scheduled for two days later at 8 am. When that day came, 8:00 came and went, and we were told 9:00, then 10:00, then 10:20, which is when they finally arrived. Once here, work was done professionally, and they left everything clean. After they left, they called and said that my check, made out to "Holy Smokes" couldn't be cashed because it wasn't made out to "Holy Smokes Chimney Service (or Sweeps)", the full company name. I said I would replace the check if they brought me the uncashed check, and they said it had already been destroyed and discarded (less than an hour after they left my house). They wanted me to send a payment by Zelle. My bank advised me that there should have been no issue in depositing my check, so I'm unsure why they couldn't do that. My bank put a stop payment on the check and advised me not to send the Zelle payment until a business day had passed, since the stop payment wouldn't apply to any checks already deposited at a bank or via mobile app. The contractor did agree to deduct the bank stop payment fee from my total due. Also, in the course of the process, they changed their phone numbers, and I was unable to reach them at all until they responded to my query through their website. At one point, I discussed cancelling with them and getting my down payment back. I was advised that their cancellation policy only allowed me to receive 20% back. I advised them that nowhere in the paperwork they provided was there a cancellation policy. They said they had just put it in place recently. I told them that I didn't think they could hold customers to a policy that was created after an order was placed and about which a customer was never informed. I agreed to let them reschedule the work again, with the understanding that if they failed to show up, I would have to cancel. They showed up that time. While I can highly recommend their work on the chimney and fireplaces, several of their business practices were unconventional and uncomfortable."
