"We had a stain beside the bathroom ceiling that seemed to point toward the flat roof. The membrane around the air shaft had already been patched once, but the stain returned. During testing, water placed on the roof stayed outside, while water applied higher on the shaft wall appeared inside. The metal cap at the top of the shaft had separated at one corner, and several mortar joints directly beneath it were open. Rain was entering the wall, traveling through the masonry, and showing up near the roof line. The cap was repaired, the open joints were repointed, and the roof flashing was replaced where it had been disturbed by earlier patches.
