"Arrived as scheduled with a six man crew. Did grading adding and removing stone as required, but did not roll the graded area prior to asphalt work, which really should have been done. Installed asphalt. My driveway is rather long with an enlarged parking area in front of the garage, 42'x42'. These folks had problems with making sure the asphalt was laid at the same thickness throughout the entire lay of material. They could not finish the project in one day so when they came back the second day they were installing hot asphalt against the previous day's work [cold asphalt], which caused poor seam development. The paving machine they had was too small for this project, but I was not told that before they started. Hence the driveway has highs and lows in it. I am not pleased with this after paying as much as I did for the job. Brought back the owner and expressed my dissatisfaction with the highs and lows and was given a 'story' as to how I had to let the asphalt 'settle in'. "Patching low areas by adding material will not look good" as stated by the owner. Hence at this point I knew where the conversation was heading. I have been in construction for over thirty [30] years, and asphalt does not 'settle in'! Only option is to go to court for a settlement, and it is not really worth my time. Sure wish they had had a larger paving machine. Seams both hot and cold are VERY visible and not good looking at all. Overall the job is okay to the normal homeowner I would assumne, but having experience in construction I know it could have been completed in a better format using a larger paving machine and doing a continuous lay of material. Just too big a job for these folks. They tried, but their quialty of their finished project leaves much room for improvement . All could be finished to a better level of completion by coming back and adding another 1 1/2" of material to the entire driveway. That would fill the low areas and give a more finished even look to the entire drive."

"Very pleased that removal was done in one day with the grading for new areas. Concrete was poured and finished within six hours on a following day. Workers worked so hard it made my muscles hurt just watching them."

"Jim and Rhonda from A-1 Concrete were awesome to work with.  They were quick to respond and come out to give me an estimate.  I got on their schedule the same day as they were booked for several weeks.  They were great to communicate and let me know when they could come and do the work.  They arrived on schedule and were quick to set up and get started.  Watching the process was really amazing and I learned a lot from talking to them during the job.  They've been doing this a long time and their confidence put me at ease.  I was 100% satisfied with the work they did and my wife and I both really enjoyed talking with them and getting to know them.  They are wonderful folks.  I've already called about another job and I have recommended them to several friends. <br />"

"Due to an address mixup, he was a little late but it wasn't significant and he apologized. The work he did was exactly as advertised, the low pressure forced no water into the house (all my prior attempts at pressure washing my house did exactly that) and the pre-wash stuff he put on did a marvelous job of making my house look just about brand new! I have gotten multiple compliments from multiple people who come over and see my house all of them saying it looks brand new. Things I thought would require scraping and repainting look great now. He noticed some lichen growing on a section of my roof and sprayed it with bleach and called my attention to it. Very friendly, very professional - worth every penny."

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in Kingsport, TN

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
