"Renovating a home can be stressful, but this team made the entire experience smooth and exciting. They truly listened to what we wanted and helped bring our vision to life. Every room feels thoughtfully designed and carefully built. The attention to small details, the clean job site, and the respectful attitude of the crew made such a difference. Walking into our "new" home for the first time after the renovation was an emotional moment. We couldn't be happier with the outcome and are so grateful we chose them. "

"We were so pleased with Skyline Builders. Tony, Benjamin, and the crew were respectful, professional and thorough through all the phases of our bathroom remodel. They communicated with us daily as the project was underway and always took our preferences into account. At the end of each day, they made sure that the area was cleaned and protected, and because all the materials were picked and ready, there were no missed or delayed days. All of the crew were hardworking and so skilled at their different jobs. Our bathroom turned out just the way we pictured it, and I would recommend this company any time"

"Gold Remodeling finished our basement remodel a few weeks ago and we?ve already had friends over asking who did the work. The transformation is kind of crazy. What stood out most to me was how approachable the team was, never felt like I was being brushed off when I had questions. We?re in Seattle, so dealing with older homes can be tricky, but they seemed to know how to handle everything that came up. End result feels high quality and functional, not just ?nice looking.?"

"Since I now need to use a wheelchair, several doorways in my home needed to be widened. Two exterior doors had to be replaced, one of which also had to be changed to open out rather than opening in. I hired Johnson Custom Builders and was absolutely delighted with their work. They were always professional. They laid or hung plastic sheeting to contain the dust they created, then at the end of the day they ran the vacuum and even mopped the floor! They were respectful of me and my home. Their work was excellent. One of the things I most appreciated was Ryan Johnson's communication with me before, during, and at the conclusion of the project. He listened to what I needed and then figured out how to make it happen. I recommend Johnson Custom Builders highly!"

"We have hired Starlight Remodeling for two projects in the last two years. The first was an upgrade to a main floor bathroom. The second, much bigger job, was a renovation of our daylight basement, which included a major bathroom renovation, new flooring, painting, and lighting installation. Dave was great to work with at all steps of the process. He listened to our goals, offered suggestions, and updated us regularly on progress. He's very responsive. When we discovered a minor issue after the second project was completed, he addressed it promptly. We're also very appreciative of his crew, who were very friendly and skilled. We highly recommend Starlight Remodeling."

Small jobs welcome

"Emmanuel built us a beautiful deck that will serve us well. Throughout the project, Emmanuel was friendly but professional, communicating well. Work began quickly and Emmanuel was on-site to both work and oversee the project and, when we hit a snag and work paused due to a part being backordered, he kept us abreast of the situation. I had a deadline of when I needed the deck to be completed and Emmanuel made sure that happened. We recommend Wooden Gate Construction!"

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Kirkland, WA

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
