"Design Exteriors designed, built and installed custom iron railing for the front porch of our home. The design exceeded our expectations, as it was contemporary yet looked like something that would have been added when our home was built. The powder coated iron with hold up well on our south facing porch, and in all four seasons of Colorado weather! Cedric and his team were very professional in completing the project when promised, and in delivering an addition to our home that has already received many compliments. Littleton, Colorado"

Restaurants WISH they could be this awesome.
When we saw this gorgeous tree, we knew we had to plan for it in the design. We took it into account when we designed the roof of the pavilion and even thought it through when we poured the concrete for the patios.
Tough day at work? Come home to this.

"From start to finish, the GS folks were exceptional. Keith Vigil clearly explained details of the project to me, Sandra in the office was always there to field my questions, the demo and siding crew were hard working and pleasant under the guidance of Edwin's daily presence, and Oswald faithfully and capably handled any finishing touches to the project. This is a five-star company with devoted and talented employees!"

Customers say: Super punctual

"The work was completed in a timely manor and overall looks good, during the project Gabe tried to change the scope many times, but ultimately did stick to our quote. Once work was completed he requested an additional $600 “because we did such a good job” finally within 90 days of having our fence and gate installed the gate began to sag. I contacted Gabe to give him an opportunity to make it right but he did not respond in any capacity. Moral of the story: make sure the work is 1000% because once peppers leaves they won’t return to fix any errors."

"Would not recommend Dan Olsen with Upstate Built. He is not consistent with the time he says he will meet you, gets upset if you cant meet earlier to drop off paint/stain samples We paid %50 of the estimate of 6 stair to be demode and to replace new treads/risers. $1,165 is the amount we paid to secure the project. When he came, he was an hour late and had no risers. In the little over 2 hours he was here, he laid down some plastic for dust protection that he charged us $200 for, then just took the bottom stair tread off and mentioned there was no middle stringer(support) That changed his demeaner, he did not know how to finish the project or did not want to. So after about an hour, he went to a buy a new tread and screwed it back on. So we were charged for stained/poly treads(which we wanted) and the new tread and after paying $1,165, with some negotiating, he still billed us an additional $320. He charged for 3 hrs of work when he was only here for 2. He has questionable behaviors! "

"Whatever you do -- do NOT hire this company! I gave S&R Eagle Services a 50% deposit to tear out and replace a small deck on my townhome'24. They promised the work would be a simple 2-day job for them and they promised it would be done by the end of the summer. Unfortunately, all I received from them after that was lies and broken promises. After getting the BBB involved, the owner Sara Luevano still will not return my deposit and want to charge ME a 20% "cancellation" fee for never building my deck! In addition, the materials my HOA had approved last year were discontinued and are now no longer available. They made up lies with the BBB trying to make up excuses for dropping the ball on replacing my deck. Then they wanted me to wait around several more months this year for them to get around to getting their contractor's license in El Paso County for several months -- since they hadn't renewed it! By then, it was obvious the owners are liars, dishonest and not reliable. NO THANKS! "

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Kittredge, CO

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
