"David and his father, Jose, were outstanding! They arrived on time, were exceptionally professional and I couldn’t be happier with the end result. There were no surprises, explaining every step of what they were doing and answering any question I had. I would (and likely will) use J&D Woodwork again without a doubt!"

"Victor came out and gave me a estimate to replace some rotten wood siding and place a metal post for my storm damaged patio cover. I hired him and he started next day. Victor was thorough and detail oriented. Very happy with his work and will keep his # for future and friends in need."

Small jobs welcome

"As we get older reaching the bottom shelves of cabinets meant getting on our hands and knees using a flashlight to get what we needed We hired them to remove all the shelves from the bottom cabinets and replace them with drawers that pulled out easily. They did an excellent job for us. Very professional The price was well within our budget and the final product was fabfrigentastic! I highly recommend them for all your cabinet work."

"Gerald's prices can't be beat and his guys get in and out quickly. He has refinished several types of historic wood floors for me and every time I'm so pleased I called him. He even makes repairs and patches entire sections of floors so that you'll have no idea which areas were replaced."

"Mark was excellent to work with. Very easy to speak with and clear estimates were received. I had them install a couple of doors. The first two sets of doors arrived from Home Depot damaged (this was obviously outside of their control). When the second set arrived, one of the door was not the correct size (also not necessarily within their control). As a result of their supplier, the work took nearly 3 months to complete, but I don't hold that against them. I am satisfied with the new doors, they function as desired. One is off-level a bit. Some trim that was installed had mold begin budding quickly on it, but they were quick to respond, clean it up, and replace it. Overall, I am satisfied with their responsiveness."

"Jose brought a team and they began working on replacing the smoke detectors, replacing the diverter and tub stopper - which turned into a trial as the diverter was an old piece and he had to go all over town to find a replacement. He installed electrical GFCI outlets in the kitchen, two baths, one in garage and one outside - and went above and beyond by replacing the receptacle housings as well. He also found a leak behind the tub and repaired it after asking permission. the cost was very reasonable and it would have cost me three times as much with a plumber. I would use Jose again and have recommended him to my realtor and other friends. Great job!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in League City, TX

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
