"Sunny Day was wonderful to work with from the early planning design stages through the finished project. Joe was an excellent communicator and would often reach out to us with a plan and timeline without us even needing to ask- we always new what the plan was and if we were on schedule (which they always were). He and his team kept their workspace impeccably clean every day - including daily haul away of materials/garbage from the job. Our basement is exactly as I envisioned and the quality of work was top notch. I would highly recommend Sunny Day/Joe to anyone looking for a dependable, communicative, clean and all around excellent contractor. "

"We had our deck replaced by Green Shield and are very happy with our new deck. We were thinking about having our previous deck reskinned, since it seemed quite sturdy, but the previous composite decking had failed. The cost to rebuild was not considerably more than the reskin cost, plus with the rebuild, we have a lifetime warranty. Craig and Tyler did a great job (along with the other guys that were there to help periodically) and they both are very hard workers and really care about the quality of their work. Our new deck is very well constructed, solid and looks great! We even have a better view out of our walkout with the new deck due to the integrated construction method, less lumber underneath to have to look at. Thanks again Craig and Tyler!"

"I hired Price Point Builders AFTER Bruce had come out to look at our project. He was a terrific guy and had incredible ideas and a plan for us. He said our project could be completed in less than a day. No worries. We were excited to have him on board with our idea and anxiously awaited his email quote. 5 days later, still no quote. I texted him and left several messages before he finally sent it. It was fair pricing for what we were expecting him to do. After accepting his bid and digging a 2 foot deep x 2 foot wide x 24 foot long trench as he instructed us to do before Friday June 30th when he said he would be arriving to begin the project at 8am. June 30th: 8am came and went. No call, no text. I texted and called him SEVERAL times. At 11:30 he finally called me and said he would not be able to make it until Monday. I told him it was unacceptable as we had asphalt coming on Monday. We needed to wrap this up. He said he would have someone come and start it but it would be a week before he could finish. I was so upset that he changed his story AFTER we accepted his bid and dug up our entire driveway next to our home for this to find he was not going to keep his word. He said that he drove by THAT MORNING to see if we dug the trench. ( I was calling and texting him for 3.5 hours, but he did not have the decency to reply - yet, he found it acceptable to drive by and not stop or contact me???) He actually started giving me all kinds of excuses as to why he could not do the job as promised and told me how busy he was. Then, he told me that my husband told him something about the job that was completely untrue - and was placing blame on my husband! Then, Bruce started making insinuations that I was lying about having asphalt laid the day before a holiday. I had ENOUGH. I called my husband and told him what Bruce had said and done, and my husband told me to call him and fire him now. I fired him on the spot. I told him we would not need his services and would be replacing him with another company. As I was telling him why, he kept talking over me like what I had to say just didn't matter. (and to him, it didn't matter.) Our entire project was put on hold and our timeline moved because he was not reliable. That is what it boils down to. It is a shame because he has an incredible mind and great ideas...just horrible follow-through. If you value your time, find a contractor who values your time as well."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Lowell, IN

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
