While technically possible in some situations, installing new shingles over existing ones is not recommended by roofing professionals. This approach adds considerable weight to your roof structure, prevents proper inspection of the underlying deck, and may create moisture issues. Many building codes limit homes to a maximum of two roofing layers, requiring complete removal before new installation if that limit has been reached.
Your local climate significantly impacts both installation requirements and long-term performance. Regions with severe weather conditions often require additional reinforcement measures that increase installation costs. Performance-wise, three-tab shingles have lower wind resistance ratings compared to premium options, making them less suitable for hurricane-prone regions.
