"Walter did a great job.  He came to our house as scheduled. He even called to say he was going to be a little late as another job was taking him longer than planned.  He came on a Saturday at no extra charge on his rates.
I was aware of what was causing the leak and what it would take to repair the leak by checking it on a self repair site on the internet.  I felt the job was a little above my level of expertise so we called a plumber.
Walter did only the work that was required and his price was astonishingly fair.  He is a licensed master plumber (we checked) who is self employed.  He did a great job and I would not hesitate to use him again or recommend his services.

"During a rainy spell, I noticed the ceiling and wall around the chimney were wet. I didn't know how long it had been leaking and wanted to get it fixed ASAP to minimize any damage or mold that might result from the leakage. I checked Angie's List and this company had four rave reviews and was nearby. I called hoping I could get an estimate the next morning. He did even better and came that evening. The estimate seemed reasonable and I decided I didn't want to delay the work to get more estimates, so the next morning (Wednesday) I called and accepted it. He said he could start in two weeks. I asked him if there was anything I could do to prevent leakage in the meantime and he said he would stop by and put some tar around the chimney. I also asked him to check the other chimney, which is on the section of the roof that was not being replaced. He called me at work later in the day and said he had tried to seal around the leaking chimney but it was in pretty bad shape. He was afraid it would still leak so he put me ahead of some other jobs and said he would start on Monday. Instead he came with a crew even sooner, the next afternoon (Thursday). They came back Friday morning and finished the job with the exception of some minor items. They came back Monday morning and did that. They also sealed around the second chimney that I had asked him to check. Even though I had mentioned this after receiving his estimate, he did not charge extra for it. Needless to say, I was very happy with the service."

"Well, the first time the replacement was ordered it was the wrong one, which of course, delayed the installation a week. When it was finally installed I had to pay an additional $850 for code upgrades. This I was not informed of by Home Shield. Then we noticed that there was water on the garage floor and found that the pipe coming in from the wall was leaking at the wall so had to call the plumbing company back out to fix it. They first tried to say it was not their fault but since there wasn't a leak before they installed they did fix it. I have used Home Shield a few times before and never had a problem. Some of the companies they use are not the best so you have to research them before you commit. I have found HS service to be good if you do your homework. At the end of the day I was without hot water for almost 3 weeks but it was do to the plumbing company they sent out."

FAQs for sump pump or interior foundation drains installation projects in Monhegan, ME

Most residential pumps draw approximately 1,300 to 2,900 watts when they first start, then settle at roughly 800 to 1,050 watts during normal operation. The exact number depends on the motor’s horsepower and how often the float switch tells the pump to run. Even at the high end, the electricity cost is minor compared with the expense of cleaning up a flooded basement.

Grab a ruler and an empty 18‑inch‑wide pit. During a steady rain, time how much the water rises in one minute. Multiply that depth (in inches) by 60 to calculate gallons per hour, then add 50% for safety. If the result tops 2,100 gallons per hour—about 35 gallons a minute—you’ll need a 3/4‑horsepower unit. Anything lower, and a 1/3- or 1/2-horsepower pump should do the trick.

Loud rattling, constant cycling, or shuddering vibrations are the pump’s way of telling you it’s on its last legs. Musty smells, higher electric bills, and visible rust are other red flags. If the unit is 10 years old or older and exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it before the next heavy rain turns your basement into a wading pool.

You don’t have to hire a licensed plumber, but you should still bring in someone who installs sump pumps for a living—whether that’s a plumber, basement‑waterproofing specialist, or experienced handyman. They know the local codes, can wire the pump safely, and will test the system before they leave. Skipping professional help might void the warranty and could leave you with a pump that fails when you need it most.

Not every basement needs a pump, but if your home sits in a floodplain, has a high water table, or has ever taken on water during a storm, a sump pump is inexpensive insurance. For basements that only struggle with condensation or the occasional damp spot, sealing cracks and improving drainage may be all that is needed.
