"Steve responded and came out the next day. He spent about 1 hour with me because, as a new homeowner, I had a lot of questions.  Some were about how installing a new retaining wall would affect the nearb maple and Steve was very patient and thorough in answering them.  He was able to assure me that I can keep the tree if I wish and that it should survive the excavation for the wall installation, even if some of the larger roots are cut. I also really appreciated his deep knowledge about how the Norway maple affects what else I may want to plant and where.
He also gave a fair estimate for removing a second maple which is in a difficult position in the back of the house where there is poor access for equipment. The tree has been injured, but he assured me that the job is not urgent and that he could work with me to choose other trees that would work better in that location near power lines.  Working with the neighbors for access and clean-up will be needed and I trust Steve to handle it in a courteous, professional way.
I plan to use Horhut Tree Services when I do remove the 2nd maple tree and will work with them on cutting back stumps too.  Excellent first impression.

I especially appreciated that he put together the order and emailed me the cart so that I could easily pay at the store without having to figure out exactly what items I needed. "Steve was thorough in his discussions about the project. I'm usually pretty detailed about projects and think things through. Steve would bring things up that I hadn't thought of and my wife and I appreciated the time he took. He also considered that there were several options for our design to choose from and he walked us through the pros and cons. For example, the way that lights would be spaced on our wall between windows and doors was not technically even, but looked good given the spacing of those openings. Also, he showed us a couple of options for the size and spacing of slats for our roof vent so we could preview it before it was created.
Steve does not run a big company, so you get really personalized service. He is part of the projects as they happen. This also means that his availability to do projects varies. But, he is proactive about his availability and once he starts a job he and his team are on-site until it's finished.
This was our second or third project with him. At the beginning, he installed a sliding door and a pair of doors with sidelights that open onto our patio. These were installed about five years ago and we love them. In fact, he has done almost all the outside work on our house over the last five years, including unanticipated problem areas. "Day one of the project was spectacular.  Our family was so excited about this project that we took lots of photographs so we could remember what the 'old' driveway, wall, stairs, and sidewalk looked like. 

We did encounter a major problem, however with day two of the excavation.  We encountered water in the basement and garage after day two's dig.  We immediately phoned Dino and he suggested that we contact a licensed plumber to assess the situation.  Later that night (10:30 p.m.) we had a plumber dig 3-5 more feet into the driveway to install a temporary pipe to replace the broken, clogged pipe.  Day three was a plumbing day also due to unforseen plumbing issues incurred from day two's dig (and a day missed from our jobs.)  On days four and five of the project, plumbing was completed and inspected (another day's work missed.)  We did not anticipate an additional $10,000 in plumbing fees.  Days 6+ were completely dedicated to the RJL company's expertise in concrete and stone work.  Upon completion of the project, the driveway, stairs, sidewalk, and retaining wall are absolutely beautiful, as noted by the us, our  neighbors and community members who travel past our property on a daily basis.
