"My wife and I couldn’t be happier with our decision to hire Capital District Electric, and we can’t say enough good things about the owner, Eric Smith. We needed our dangerous Federal Pacific electrical panel replaced (search it). Through Angie's List, we contacted several contractors. Eric was the first to reply and the first to come over to give us an estimate. (One didn’t even bother to tell us they weren’t interested in the work.) We liked Eric right away. He’s professional, polite, and personable. He knows his trade and is very good at it. He was here when he said he would be and gone when he said would be, the place left absolutely clean. His work and work ethic are impeccable. I wish I took before and after photos of the two panels. The original one looked like a square bowl of spaghetti, with twisted wires sticking out the top, sides, and bottom. The new one is perfect with all the wires neatly entering the top. It was nice to deal with the owner of the company, rather than someone who’s just doing a job. It would be a big mistake to make a decision about Capital District Electric and Eric based on the two lowest ratings on this site. Obviously they didn’t have work done, and one doesn’t appear to apply to this contractor. They should be taken down. And No, we’re not related to Eric."

"We had a project to install a generator hook-up point and a new 240 line for a central air conditioner. The Electrician, Wes, has to "fish" a wire through our garage wall ceiling to reach the outside wall - the work was completed very quickly and well done. If you need high quality electrical work S & S Electric is an excellent choice."

"Craig and his team did a great job of wiring my heat pump and installing a new circuit for the bathroom. Their work appears to be quality, with all the wiring neatly arranged and stapled in place. They were punctual, professional, and friendly, and left the jobsite neater than when they arrived. I would hire them again."

"I got them from Angie's. They gave me some tips or hints. Then I took advantage of their replacement of our entire electric service in 2015. I had them here twice. Once was for the inspection, once was to replace the in coming electrical service. I think that was like $50 or $60. It wasn't an awful lot. The first time and last time, I give them A across the board. A for everything, the promptness, the professionalism and even putting up with my silly questions. It was done professionally. It was done when they said they'd do it. The first time, they gave me an estimate on price of doing the full house. I think it was two years later when I called them back. I said, 'You gave me an estimate two years ago. How much has it changed?' He told me it hadn't. The price stayed the same for two years. I just felt good. They were here when they said they'd be here. They were here a long time. They were here whole day. They had to coordinate it with national grid too. They solved any problem we thought we had with our service so it was wonderful."

"I needed an electrician to install a 240 volt outlet quickly for an electric dryer coming on Monday. And didn’t know who to use, so went on Angie's List and found Ohms Electrical Services, who responded back within a few hours of calling and was able to come the next day. Lloyd was the electrician, who came and did a great job. He knows his stuff and if very personable and professional. He also saw work a past electrician had done that was not to code and explained why and that is was a safety issue, so will be having him back soon to fix that as well as other projects. Definitely, would recommend and very reasonable price."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in New-baltimore, NY

Yes, a licensed electrician is essential for this project. Running an electrical service from the road to your house involves connecting to utility power lines, complying with national and local electrical codes, and safely handling high-voltage systems.

Licensed professionals understand proper wire sizing, grounding requirements, and voltage drop calculations needed for safe installation. Most jurisdictions require permits and inspections that only certified professionals can obtain. The safety risks and potential for property damage make this project inappropriate for DIY attempts.

Overhead installations are less expensive than underground options. For a 1000-foot run, overhead service costs between $8,000 and $15,000, while underground service ranges from $10,000 to $25,000.

Overhead lines require less labor and fewer materials since they don't need trenching or conduit. However, underground lines offer better protection from weather events and aesthetic benefits. Your decision should balance your budget constraints with long-term reliability and visual preferences.

You might need to upgrade your electrical panel depending on your power requirements. If your existing panel cannot handle the additional load from the extended service, upgrading to a 200-amp service (costing $750 to $2,000) may be necessary.

A licensed electrician can evaluate your current system and determine if an upgrade is required. Factors include what you'll be powering at the end of the line, existing electrical demand, and whether voltage drop over the distance will affect performance.

Running electric service from the road to a house requires electrical permits from your local building department, costing between $500 and $2,000 depending on your location. You may also need excavation permits for trenching work if installing an underground service. Your utility company will have its own application process for connecting to its grid. A licensed electrical contractor can handle all the necessary permit applications as part of their service, ensuring your installation meets all local code requirements.
