"1. punctual on estimate appointment 2. three estimates were solicited all were equivalent service for product two allowed for Owens Corning or GAF and were certified as was On Top 3. The date proposed was mid October but the actual work was much sooner (low slope roof) and completed in several hours The roof has now gone through several seasons without issue. "I contacted Dave based on his amazing reviews on Angie's List and he did not disappoint. After some strong windstorms a couple months back, I was finding some shingle pieces on my lawn. I became concerned as my roof is now 20 years old and called a couple roofers. I initially left Dave a voice mail and he called me back promptly and arranged a time to come out. A roofer from another company that I called randomly showed up at my house a half hour before Dave. That gentleman did not get on my roof and quickly wrote me up a quote for full roof replacement for 17k. Dave arrived son thereafter and immediately said "you don't need a new roof." He took out his ladder and actually did an inspection of my roof. He suggested that he replace some shingles that needed replacement and wrote me up a quote for $350. He promised to come back in a couple weeks to do the work. As promised, he texted me in a couple weeks and arrived at the scheduled day and time. You can't even tell the crew had been here after they left. First of all the shingles were a perfect match to my existing 20 year old shingles and secondly there wasn't a speck of debris left behind. Dave called me outside to chat afterwards and then only charged me $300. I highly recommend using Dave and his crew for your roof. He is the kind of guy that you hope to be able to hire for every trade. Honest, reliable and does a great job. Thank you Dave!"

"Barn Rescue – My barn was hit by a vehicle, which broke a large post and pushed section of siding out from under the roofline, plus major damage at ground level. Brad shored it up for the winter with an array of jacks and an enormous chain to ensure the thing wouldn’t fall down till they could return in the spring. Come spring, they fully replaced the damaged section’s support members and facade, and added bracing to the attic, rendering it stronger than before. Foundation support: The sagging beams and jerry-rigged support columns in the dirt basement of our 18th century house were inadequate. They dug and poured a dozen footings and lally columns, supporting a line of new 6x6 and 9x9 beams that provide solid support to the house above. They showed up promptly every day, worked fast, and left the site clean and finished. Both Brad and Chad have a deep knowledge about old houses and the techniques that were used, and I felt my historic register property was in good hands."

"Gary, was very helpful and pointed me on the right direction after I had discussed my concerns. Had he been able to help me I would have gladly hired him. My system ended up being under warranty and he suggested I contact the manufacture as to not void my warranty."

"Sam, the owner, although busy with many other jobs, came within a couple of hours of my calling his office when he heard that water was coming into the house from the roof. He performed all the work himself. Sam explained everything he was going to do, was very pleasant and professional. Will have him return in Spring to do a heat wire installation to prevent ice damming again. I highly recommend Sam and his company.

"William and his crew actually started the job a few days earlier then expected and worked numerous hours to get the majority of the job done in just two days. Day three was used to clean up the grounds and they got rid of all of the debris. Hard working guys and dedicated to get a four story house completed"

"They worked all day until the job was done, including sitting in the rain for 2 hours until the job could be completed & consulted with me on repairs to the roof. Cleanup was very thorough. I would definitely recommend them. They have pics of my roof on Facebook - which only a homeowner could love :^)"

"Everything went great, there were a couple changes that had to be made as the job progressed, we found out the old toilet had been leaking pretty badly, and there was a bunch of rotting floor boards.  Other than that they completed the job within our time frame, cleaned the house up at the end of each day very well, and really treated our home like it was theirs.  Everything was sealed up with plastic barriers so we wouldn't get dust throughout the house, I was very pleased about that.  We plan to have them back in the next year or two for the kitchen.

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in New Braintree, MA

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
