"We had an issue with a Dry Well periodically backing up. Damian and the D Day Plumbing team were very professional and knowledgeable and provided an estimate with a couple different options and their related costs. They installed a new utility sink, sink pump, and needed piping and valves with tie ins to the main septic. They made improvement above and beyond the initial job breakdown, all the while staying within budget. I will certainly consider them again for any future work. Thank you Damian and the D Day Plumbing Team for a job very done!"

"Our service tech Alvin Miller III of GroundWorks/formally know as Busy Dog came for a sump pump annual checkup. Alvin was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his work. He very patiently explained to me how our sump pump and back up battery operates. He was fast and efficient and diligently recorded all of the work that was done. I was very happy to hear that everything is in good shape and nothing needed to be updated and replaced. I highly recommend GroundWorks aka Busy Dog company."

"I have done business with Whittier Plumbing & Heating for a number of years. I have been consistently impressed with their professionalism and the high quality of their work. But I have appreciated even more their immediate response on a couple of occasions when we had an urgent problem -- heat stopped working in the winter; a radiator pipe sending a flood of water into an upstairs bedroom. One emergency occurred on a weekend; the other took place on a holiday when Whittier was not open. In both instances they responded to my phone call and had someone on site and dealing with the problem as quickly as I could have hoped. They do a great job, they work efficiently, they charge a fair price for their services, and they take care of their customers. I couldn't recommend Whittier Plumbing & Heating more highly. "We came to our home to fix a washer. We told him what was wrong and what was needed and he came to fix it. We thought he was going to fix it that day, but he said that this was a diagnostic appointment. Which is fine so we paid him $165 and he was to come back that week to fix it with the part. He never showed back up. He never returned our call or message."

FAQs for sump pump or interior foundation drains installation projects in New Salem, MA

Most residential pumps draw approximately 1,300 to 2,900 watts when they first start, then settle at roughly 800 to 1,050 watts during normal operation. The exact number depends on the motor’s horsepower and how often the float switch tells the pump to run. Even at the high end, the electricity cost is minor compared with the expense of cleaning up a flooded basement.

Grab a ruler and an empty 18‑inch‑wide pit. During a steady rain, time how much the water rises in one minute. Multiply that depth (in inches) by 60 to calculate gallons per hour, then add 50% for safety. If the result tops 2,100 gallons per hour—about 35 gallons a minute—you’ll need a 3/4‑horsepower unit. Anything lower, and a 1/3- or 1/2-horsepower pump should do the trick.

Loud rattling, constant cycling, or shuddering vibrations are the pump’s way of telling you it’s on its last legs. Musty smells, higher electric bills, and visible rust are other red flags. If the unit is 10 years old or older and exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it before the next heavy rain turns your basement into a wading pool.

You don’t have to hire a licensed plumber, but you should still bring in someone who installs sump pumps for a living—whether that’s a plumber, basement‑waterproofing specialist, or experienced handyman. They know the local codes, can wire the pump safely, and will test the system before they leave. Skipping professional help might void the warranty and could leave you with a pump that fails when you need it most.

Not every basement needs a pump, but if your home sits in a floodplain, has a high water table, or has ever taken on water during a storm, a sump pump is inexpensive insurance. For basements that only struggle with condensation or the occasional damp spot, sealing cracks and improving drainage may be all that is needed.
