"This was a remodeling job. Ed finished 800 sq ft of basement. Framed walls, drywall, insulation, electrical outlets, suspended ceiling, lights, installed doors. (Flooring was done by a company he recommended.) He impressed me by carefully listening to what I wanted and provided valuable advice throughout the design and execution of the work. He started work promptly and skillfully coordinated the work of his employees and subcontractors so that there was very little downtime. Workers were very competent, friendly, and respectful to us, the homeowners. I highly recommend him for any type of remodeling or new construction project and would use him exclusively in the future. I want to recognize him for his quality work, competence, helpfulness, honesty and integrity."

"Eric and his wonderful crew brought this bath back to life.  Water had damaged not only the bath walls, but also the supports in basement.  He took out and replaced studs, beams, backer board, and  floor boards.  Then installed tile floor and all new fixtures. I felt he treated my home as he would his own home, considering all work from the owner's viewpoint.  I plan to use his company again in the future.  Have recommended him to neighbors in historic district."

"The crew were professional, respectful and clean. They worked nonstop until everything was in place and cleaned after themselves. My kitchen looks new, my dark staircase to the basement is lit...even at night. The results are dramatic! The price was fair and comparable to what I expected. I plan on using them for other projects."

"We had Don do some foundation work for us three years ago and appreciated his work ethic, quality, and price. So now with another job he came out and inspected and told us to call a carpenter first because, not that he did not want the business, but we had to do some improvements on the sill plate and decking area before he could work on the foundation. I really appreciate his honesty, saying we might not need him if a carpenter can fix the sill plate."

"We thought we needed foundation work. They not only told us that was incorrect. They directed us to a structural engineer who would be able to help us. No charge. Most appreciated."

"He definitely gave me the unfiltered truth on what needed to be done. For me, it would have been cost probative to have the work performed. However, Jim gave me some good advice to help mitigate the issue myself. While he did not perform any actual work, I appreciated his professionalism and thoughts on the job. I definitely would hire him for future work I would need done."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in New-troy, MI

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
