"Gaby previously made custom built in desks for our home office. We then decided we wanted a separate matching cabinet. We were so happy with all the work he has done for us we called him to make the cabinet. Once again he used top of the line materials. The cherry wood and finish is a perfect match. We couldn’t be happier."

"Bob was great to work with. He diagnosed the problem with a loose deck stair and rail and provided two solutions, a more expensive and less expensive one. He completed the work in a day. He also fixed a broken kitchen drawer slide."

"Great. Larry listen to what I wanted. Made some suggestions and we went from there. He was very professional and also very detailed He took his time and did the job right. Some of the staid were cracked and all were very noisy. Larry promised they would be very quiet when done. He kept that promise. The stairs are beautiful and very quiet. We highly recommend him and will use him again."

"Amazing work- highly recommended! We had a bunch of work done on our Cambridge Queen Anne Victorian, including custom wainscoting in our powder room and a bunch of other projects, and could not be happier with the quality of the work and professionalism of Luke and his team. He worked with our budget, and often came up with ideas to help us trim costs. His hard work and out of the box thinking helped us realize our vision, and also won us a restoration award from the Cambridge Historical Commission! Wed use Bellamy Construction again in a heartbeat, and wholeheartedly recommend them to all!"

"I cannot speak highly enough of Tom and Brad Green of Colonial Restorations. We have lived in our antique house for 16 years now, and like most old homes, some of its previous repairs were good, some not so good. Tom Green worked on this house for its previous owners, and his work was, by far, the best in the house. So, we continued to use Colonial - Tom, then Tom and Brad - as we learned the ropes about caring for an old house - our first house, old or new. Over the years, they have replaced sills and posts and beams, and rebuilt parts of our loose stone foundation. Most recently, they replaced the last original posts in our basement, (one of which was a tree trunk still with bark on it), including pouring new custom footings, in advance of our finally cementing the dirt floor. The work here is never easy - nothing is level, nothing is square - but the Greens' end result has always been beautiful - strong and made to last. Their prices are fair and without hidden costs....maybe not the lowest bid you might get, but you know it's a real bid that they will stand behind. They triage projects for us, giving us an idea of what other items will likely need attention in the next few years. We're not done with this house yet....we've never won the lottery, and there's always another repair..... and plan to use them again soon. I feel confident knowing that the next owners of this house, whoever they might be, will see the quality of the work and know that we cared enough to have the right people help us with the ongoing repair and maintenance of a 275+ year old house. I am a real person, a real customer, with no ties to the company, and was more than happy to write this review."

"Contacted George based on Angies list reviews. Came out even earlier than had been scheduled after calling to be sure that would work.  Did  great job, cleaned up, even gave us an "upgrade" over the quoted model at no charge.  Other company we had called charged us $160 for coming out and telling us nothing could be done to repair what we had, and when we offered to hire them to replace the opener, said they would only give us $40 credit for the previous trip.  We paid more than that for George and happily so.  His price was still at or below others, and no way the service could have been better.

"I cannot say enough fabulous things about Paul and his team at Emerald Painting and decorating. From the moment we initially reached out to him Paul was incredibly responsive, professional, and truly a pleasure to work with. We had a very narrow window between our closing and move in date for our new home - this did not phase Paul and his team in the slightest. Without hesitation Paul worked around our tight schedule to make time for a quote, responded with a quote promptly, answered all of our questions professionally and quickly, and offered to tackle our painting project over the one weekend that would work for our closing and moving schedule. What’s more is that we were scheduled to be traveling internationally during this time meaning that Paul and his team were the first to enter our new home after the prior owners moved out. While we were abroad he tackled the project with ease and kept us updated by email. Being the first into the empty house he found a few new defects in the walls and along the trim that we hadn’t noticed while the prior owners furniture was in the house - he alerted us to these and took it upon himself to have his team fix these as well for us so the house would be move in ready upon our return. Through the process from our first walk through to his quote to how he kept us updated with our project while we were abroad we were very impressed with his constant attention to detail and open communication. We returned to find the work of Emerald Painting and Decorating complete and truly impeccable. Paul met us at the house to walk us through everything when we returned and we could not be more thrilled with the finished product, the service, and the relationship Paul fosters with his clients. We will be quick to recommend Emersld Painting with the highest of regards to any of our friends and family looking to tackle painting projects moving forward and would be thrilled to have the opportunity to work with their team again for future projects moving forward. Thank you tons to Paul and his team for a job very well done!"

FAQs for wood stairs and railings repair projects in Norfolk, MA

Hiring a pro to refinish wooden stairs means labor makes up 20% to 30% of your total budget. That price covers sanding, staining, and sealing each step. In most cases, a certified refinisher can tackle a 10-step staircase in about two hours, then apply stain and sealant for a durable, eye-catching finish that stands up to daily traffic.

A pro can sand a standard 10-step staircase in roughly two hours, then needs another four to six hours for each coat of stain and sealant to dry. DIYers should budget up to a week for sanding, staining, and sealing in stages. With a crew on site, the bulk of the work is completed in a single day, minimizing disruptions while still achieving a high-quality finish.

It’s possible to refinish stairs without full-scale sanding by using chemical strippers, power buffers, or simply layering a fresh finish over the existing coat. Chemical strippers break down old stains and sealants, while buffers quickly shave off surface material. Even so, a quick hand-sand with fine-grit paper helps the new finish bond properly and look smooth. As always, suit up in protective gear and follow product directions to keep your wood—and yourself—safe.

For most stair projects, you’ll want two sandpaper grits. Begin with 80- to 120-grit to strip the old finish and even out rough spots, then move to 150- to 220-grit for a smooth, ready-for-stain surface. A power sander speeds up the coarse pass, but switches to hand sanding with the fine grit in corners and along edges to keep abrasion even and give stain or sealer something to grab onto.
