"Highly highly recommend these guys! We had originally thought we wanted to replace a staircase wall with a railing, then quickly changed our minds to something a little more modern after they came out to check the area and provide a quote. Not only was the communication fantastic, but the finished product turned out AMAZING!!! We are thrilled with the work done and will definitely be using them in the future for other projects. Thank you!!!!"

"Everything was going great at the start of the project with the demo of the old deck in March 2016. However the craftsmanship of the carpenter was not very good, boards were rough cut and the gaps between the deck boards were inconsistent. Luis then stained the deck as promised, however this was too early to stain and the deck boards start seeping sap. It was unusable, we asked him to repair which he did, and they did a great job of fixing and re-staining the deck boards."

"It was messy but that is to be expected when working on sheet-rock and carpentry. The work itself turned out very well. The job was to enlarge two closets, repair wood and sheet-rock, install two large doors with mirrors, casing, and paint. Good carpentry work; we had a couple of problems but he immediately asked what we thought and did not try to cover or hide the imperfection. Mr Tolbert was willing to redo a part that was not perfect - his suggestion. That, perhaps, is the most important quality: if something is not right, he will tell you, discuss ways to improve, and redo if necessary. He brought a helper to paint two rooms and the helper too was very professional. I would definitely hire him again to do carpentry, painting and other handyman work. My only 4 star instead of 5 was because it took him a while to get back to me with an estimate and a possible start day - that could be because he is overwhelmed with work. We had expected 4 days of work: 1 per closet, and 1 per painted room. He finished in 3 days (once he got a helper it went faster)."

"Very pleased with the construction and design of the work on the deck. Not pleased with is when he rebuilt our chimney chafe, his crew removed shingles and felt paper, and did not reshingle the same day, nor place a tarp over it. It rained that night, and poured water in the house. Called him back on a Sunday, and he came out and put a tarp over it. After asking him directly 3 times, we were told he or one of his crew members could re-roof it. We had to hire a roofing contractor ourselves to reshingle the chafe, which we were told he could do, and it was his error that the leak even happened, due to his negligence of no tarp to begin with. He was to come back to repair the damage it caused to the inside, showed up twice, but never came back to complete the work. Not only did we pay him for the work, but because of the negligence of no tarp, we were out another $600 to another contractor to re-roof the chafe that he said he could do. He stated that he could not find a roofer to re-roof the area, and we contacted a roofer and had them out within the hour to prevent further damage as it was still raining. As far as the construction and design of our deck we are very pleased. Was not happy after every time something needed to be done, asked for revisions to the contract, and that was never provided. He was very sporadic on the times he would show up on a daily basis. We completed the work that needed to be done to the wall inside our home, after he showed up twice, but never came back, never called. He left various tools here and has never came back to reclaim them, or even called."

"Job went great, Joe and Mike prepped rooms with plastic coverings and taped floors and walls off where necessary to keep over spray off everything. All cabinet doors and hinges removed and holes filled in and sanded prior to spraying. New doors, hinges, and drawers with soft close hinges installed and look amazing! Crew was awesome and would highly recommend."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Orchard-hill, GA

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
