"The person that came out did a professional job, as far as I know. He dug outside where the "clean-out pipe" should have been, with no success, and eventually used his snake from the system vent on the roof and found the snag, and overcame it with the snake. He said I was just lucky that it turned out that way. I went by Home Depot later and described the action to a guy in the plumbing department, and he agreed that I was lucky that he found it through the roof vent--he verified that the standard way was to do what the plumber had proposed--find the clean-out pipe and do it that way. However, the bill I paid seemed high to me for an hour's work, with no materials used other than the electric snake, which he didn't leave behind, of course. I was charged $40 for that, plus $46 for the service call and another $92 for an hour's labor. That seems excessive to me, but again, I didn't ask for an estimate ahead of time. It's the $40 for the use of the snake that I really question--that should seem like part of the deal."
