"They were prompt, professional, and thorough in their review of the problem (results of a radon test revealing higher than acceptable levels of radon), coming up with a proposal for a radon mitigation solution, providing an estimate, accomplishing the work (blocking off possible radon entrances in the basement floor and installing a venting system), providing a visible means to monitor performance of the mitigation system once installed, explaining what they were doing, and answering all questions I came up with. <br />"

"My wife and I have been putting this off for 2 years, mainly because we have run into a number of contractors who we didn't get good feelings from. Wolfgang was the complete opposite, and after a free home site estimate, we scheduled installation within 3 weeks (he was able to work us in sooner, but our schedules wouldn't cooperate). Wolfgang and his son showed up around 9:00 AM on the scheduled day and immediately went to work. It was a very cold day and they were great sports (especially having to do a large part of the installation outside). I was very comfortable leaving them alone in our house to complete the work, and was excited to see how well the suction PVC pipes were hidden from view above a drop ceiling in the mudroom. They explained that the suction fan was wired in an existing circuit and would use as much energy as a typically lightbulb (75 watts). This unit was placed along a wall of our bedroom and it is absolutely silent (I can't even hear it when I'm next to it outside). They did a great job running the pipes along a line of the home and unless you are looking for it, it is likely to never be noticed. The work was completed in 1 day (approx. 7 hours) and we had our new Radon reading in a week (down from 6.2 pCi/l to 0.7 pCi/l, under the limit of 4). Central VA Radon is certified, licensed and insured, and I would not hesitate to use them again (hopefully no need!) or to recommend them to friends."

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

FAQs for radon gas abatement projects in Palmyra, VA

The only way to know whether your home or water supply contains radon is to schedule a professional test. A qualified radon inspector will collect samples, deliver lab-verified results, and explain the findings for $150 to $800. Once you know your exact levels, you and your radon mitigation pro can choose the right system and tackle the problem before it affects your family’s health.

Both roles tackle radon, but they focus on different steps. Inspectors test your home, interpret the results, and determine whether levels exceed EPA guidelines. Mitigation pros design and install the system that lowers those levels. Some companies do both, but the skills and equipment differ, so always verify that the person you hire is properly certified for the specific service you need.

Installing a mitigation unit fixes radon problems by reducing indoor gas levels to established safe standards. A system designed and installed by a mitigation expert, tailored to your home's specific layout and foundation, guarantees effective radon reduction. This expert installation ensures consistent performance over time while safeguarding your indoor air quality.

Open windows and doors do not reduce radon levels because they trigger a pressure imbalance that draws radon-laden air into your home. This practice fails to control radon concentration and can even worsen the issue. An active suction mitigation system provides a proven, safe, and effective solution to reliably reduce radon levels.

Radon mitigation systems generally last between 10 and 30 years, depending on system type and maintenance. Passive systems endure the longest because they have no moving parts, whereas active systems, which use a fan, require fan replacement every 5 to 10 years. System components, such as PVC pipes, seals, and fittings, can remain effective for decades when paired with periodic inspections and proper maintenance.

Radon mitigation systems consume between 300 and 3,000 kWh of electricity per year, depending on fan size and system design. On average, an active radon fan draws 100 to 300 watts continuously, which translates to roughly 876 kWh annually, and adds $30 to $300 to your energy bill each year. Choosing a high-efficiency fan and ensuring tight sealing around pipes helps minimize these ongoing costs.
