"Estimate to run a gas line to my stove. The room is about 14x14 and the main line is under the same floor. I got one estimate and I bought it was high,, so I called Graham Simon. What a disappointment their estimate was 612.00, and approx 50.00 was parts the rest was labor. They even said they were going to just run straight black pipe which is the cheapest way to do it. The estimate is more than I paid for the stove and I question why would it take 8 hours to run at best 14 feet of pipe.

"I pay a monthly fee to CHW for insurance against equipment failure. Over a month ago CHW sent a repair technician to fix both of my garage doors, the technician made an adjustment on one door and chanced the opener on the other. A week or so ago the second door failed to open. Yes, my door opener is old, but the Warrantee says, if it can’t be fixed it will be replaced. CHW paid the tech $100 and said the rest $200 is on me. Please tell me why I should stay with CHW if I have to pay 2/3rds of the cost to replace the door opener? On a separate issue: Granted I accepted CHW’s offer of a Lowe’s card to replace my dishwasher, because I was unaware of how much dishwashers sell for, it cost me an additional 300. Again, please give me a reason for staying with CHW"

"Jodi was the only contractor to be prompt and detailed with his bid. All others talked vaguely about what they were going to do (maybe to add money later on?) or just didn't come back because maybe it was above their skill level? He was also the only one who could accurately describe the expected water damage and what could happen during the repair process. There were some bumps in the road with a worker of his who did not correctly rebuild some areas. Jodi recognized this before I had to say anything and he promised to make it right. Because of the rework he had to do, it added cost to the job but he did not pass those charges along to me. He stayed at his bid price, cutting into his own profits, and he did everything perfect. I'm not a professional carpenter but I can see good and bad work. Jodi explained everything he was doing and why. He even dealt with a couple of my special requests. He went above and beyond what most contractors would have done. He seems proud of the reputation of his business. The schedule went a bit longer than I would've liked but there some things that were out of our control that just happens when doing repairs like these. When materials were on site, work was done quickly. The special order windows had some issues with Lowes but even they took care of it.
I was nervous hiring a contractor for the first time. I usually do repairs myself but this was a little out of my range. I went to Angie's list to find a reputable contractor because I needed to spend this kind of money once and get it done right. I will definitely hire Machen Home Improvements to do repairs in the future as he has been attentive to everything I have asked.

"My daughter's own words:  "After my son decided to take the spout out of the wall of the tub and shower, i called Bud Hypes around 3:30 in the afternoon on a Friday! After leaving a message,thinking that they had left for the day, I got a call back with in 30 minutes from a technician saying he could be out the next morning first thing!  He gave me an estimate over the phone without even looking at it...Mike and Bobby came the next morning and got right to work, w/in the hour we had a new spout and pipe and it was cheaper than originally thought!  The technicians cleaned up after themselves and it looked like new!"  We were impressed and so was our 5 year old son!!  He asked us if we could call them the next time we needed something fixed, let's just say, I hope we don't, but if we do, we will definitely be calling Mike and Bobby again!!! "Well, the first time the replacement was ordered it was the wrong one, which of course, delayed the installation a week. When it was finally installed I had to pay an additional $850 for code upgrades. This I was not informed of by Home Shield. Then we noticed that there was water on the garage floor and found that the pipe coming in from the wall was leaking at the wall so had to call the plumbing company back out to fix it. They first tried to say it was not their fault but since there wasn't a leak before they installed they did fix it. I have used Home Shield a few times before and never had a problem. Some of the companies they use are not the best so you have to research them before you commit. I have found HS service to be good if you do your homework. At the end of the day I was without hot water for almost 3 weeks but it was do to the plumbing company they sent out."
